Video: Verstappen zorgt voor hilariteit bij vragen over balsporten

Tijdens een raceweekend schuiven de coureurs aan bij allerlei fanevenementen en andere vraaggesprekken. Ook in Miami was dat het geval en schoven Red Bull Racing-coureurs Max Verstappen en Sergio Perez samen aan met Alpine-coureurs Esteban Ocon en Pierre Gasly. Hier begrepen ze elkaar eventjes wat minder goed na een vraag over balsporten.

Het viertal wordt gevraagd naar hun vaardigheden in balsporten. Verstappen heeft een duidelijk antwoord en laat weten dat hij 'niet goed is met ballen'. Het zorgt voor de nodige hilariteit bij zijn collega's waarna Gasly nog maar eens navraagt over welke ballen zijn Nederlandse collega het precies heeft.

    Jos Verstappen heeft de Monteberg Rally in een verrassende ontknoping op zijn naam geschreven. Het was voor Jos zijn eerste rally van het jaar en in de voor hem nieuwe Skoda Fabia RS Rally2-auto. Samen met copiloot Renaud Jamoul wist de 51-jarige coureur in het westen van België zijn eerste rally te winnen, een knappe prestatie.

    Gedurende de dag voelde Jos zich steeds beter thuis op het parcours en nadat hij de laatste drie stages winnend had afgesloten, eindigde hij op exact dezelfde eindtijd als Davy Vanneste. De reglementen schrijven voor dat de uitslag van de eerste stage dan doorslaggevend is en aangezien Jos die als snelste had voltooid, werd hij zodoende als winnaar van de Monteberg Rally uitgeroepen, voor de Belg Vanneste.

    “Dit doet me enorm goed. Het was een moeilijke periode voor me omdat ik een paar maanden niet kon rijden”, aldus een breed grijnzende Jos. “Dat ik op deze manier terugkeer, daar ben ik super tevreden mee. Toen het gedurende de dag begon te regenen, was het echt verraderlijk glad, maar toen kon ik tijd terugpakken. Ik ben heel blij met mijn eerste rallywinst.”

    In tegenstelling tot het racen op een circuit, komt het er bij het rallyrijden op aan om te anticiperen op de alsmaar veranderende omstandigheden op een proef. Al ware het maar omdat er bij elke auto die eroverheen gaat, er meer zand op het asfalt kan komen te liggen. Jos heeft in de voorbereiding wel getest, maar dat was vooral om zijn nieuwe auto te leren kennen.

    Hij vertelt: “Vooral in het begin van het jaar hebben we getest. Maar testen is anders dan een proef rijden, omdat je bij een test telkens over dezelfde proef kunt rijden. Een rally is waar het om draait. Dan kun je niet oefenen en moet je er meteen staan. Deze Skoda voelt iets anders aan dan de Citroën waar ik vorig jaar in reed en wat ook een heel goede auto is”, legt Jos uit. “De Skoda geeft meer vertrouwen in de snelle bochten, maar er is iets minder grip aan de voorkant, in de langzamere bochten.”
