Steiner: F1 'doet het goed' om entertainmentgehalte bij races te verhogen

Haas-baas Guenther Steiner is wel te spreken over de plannen van Formule 1-eigenaar Liberty Media om nog meer entertainment naar de Grands Prix te brengen. De mening van Steiner vormt een groot contrast in vergelijking met een aantal F1-coureurs, en ook een flink aantal fans.

Vlak voordat de Grand Prix in Miami van start zou gaan, werden alle twintig F1-coureurs één voor één de grid opgeroepen. Twee grote en bekende muzikanten LL Cool J en Will.I.Am verzorgden het gebeuren, dat met een orkest én cheerleaders werd aangevuld. De race in het zonovergoten Miami was een uitgelezen kans voor de sport om te experimenteren om nóg meer entertainment te leveren dan dat een race van de koningsklasse bij een ‘normaal’ Grand Prix-weekend zou brengen.

Een aantal Formule 1-coureurs zoals bijvoorbeeld Max Verstappen, Pierre Gasly en Fernando Alonso waren na afloop van de race niet echt over de ideeën te spreken. Lewis Hamilton had daarentegen wél een positieve mening over de pre-race show, en heeft nu Haas-teambaas Guenther Steiner in zijn hoek:

"Ik denk dat het spektakel nu een stuk beter is dan vroeger", begint Steiner. "Vroeger gingen we gewoon racen. We deden een race, en daarna gingen we naar de volgende. Er zat niks omheen – we kwamen daar voor de motorsporfan. Daarom denk ik dat – voordat Liberty Media kwam – de sport in de Verenigde Staten niet succesvol was."

"Toen ik naar Amerika verhuisde leerde ik het land steeds meer kennen. Voorheen begrijp ik weinig van dit land, maar je moet er wonen om het te begrijpen. De mensen willen continue entertainment zien – en niet gewoon de race uit te zitten. Met de komst van concerten en entertainmentgebieden kun je je kinderen bijvoorbeeld ook bezighouden, in plaats van dat ze op een tribune of naast het circuit zitten te wachten. Dus ik denk dat de Formule 1 het heel goed doet", concludeert Steiner.

Tja als je eigen auto's niet zorgen voor entertaiment op de baan is het logisch dat je blij bent met de afleiding buiten de baan.

Ik zie liever mooie races dan clown gedoe erom heen. Maarja ik ben ook een nuchtere europeaan.
