Vowles: Verschil tussen Albon en Sargeant slinkt, maar F1-rookie moet consistenter worden

Volgens Williams-teambaas James Vowles begint zijn Formule 1-rookie Logan Sargeant aardig op tempo te komen. De Amerikaanse jongeling lijkt in racepace steeds dichter bij teamgenoot Alex Albon te komen, maar hamert erop dat de coureur uit Florida minder fouten moet proberen te maken.

Logan Sargeant is dit seizoen één van drie F1-rookies. De coureur uit Fort Lauderdale maakte al meerdere foutjes, maar liet volgens zijn teambaas al wel goede signalen van snelheid zien. Williams-teambaas James Vowles denkt dat Sargeant het in zich heeft om goed te presteren, en ziet een kleiner wordend verschil met zijn ervaren teamgenoot Alex Albon.

"Logan (Sargeant) is hier (in de Formule 1) omdat hij snel is en hij goed kan presteren. Maar hij moet nu langzaam een begin maken om alles meer gecontroleerd af te handelen, en dus probleemloos goed te presteren", begint Vowles tegenover Autosport.

"Bij beide kwalificaties in Baku wist hij door naar Q2 te komen. Die consistentie willen we zien. Ik heb hem al verteld dat hij 'snel genoeg is', en dat hij 'Q2 kan gebruiken om z'n ervaring bijna te verdubbelen.' En dat zul je binnenkort gaan zien. Hij zal langzaam daarin verbeteren. Ik verwacht niet dat hij even snel als Alex (Albon) zal zijn. Ondanks zijn grote teleurstelling in Miami zat er maar drie tienden tussen hem en Alex in Q1. Zo dicht zitten ze bij elkaar."

In zijn eerste kwalificatiesessie wist Sargeant de tijd van Albon tot in duizendsten te evenaren: de enige reden dat Red Bull-reject met de snoezige dierenvriendjes door mocht naar Q2 omdat hij zijn tijd op een eerder moment in de sessie had neergezet. Ik vermoed dat Albon het nog druk krijgt om deze knul achter zich te houden. Sargeant was weliswaar geen wereldwonder in de F2/GP2, maar dat was Albon bij lange na ook niet.

Herstel: Norris en Sargeant hadden dezelfde tijd gereden in Bahrain Q1 (1:31:653), Albon zat daar met zijn 4 jaar F1-ervaring met een duizelingwekkend verschil boven (1:31:461).
