Op woensdag besloot de Formule 1 dat de Grand Prix van Emilia-Romagna niet door kon gaan. De beslissing werd snel genomen en al snel werd duidelijk dat iedereen erachter stond. Formule 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali bezocht Imola op de dinsdagavond en trok toen al snel zijn conclusies.

In de afgelopen week werd de regio Emilia-Romagna geteisterd door een enorme hoeveelheid neerslag. Op dinsdag werd het circuit al uit voorzorg ontruimd omdat de rivier naast het circuit van Imola buiten zijn oevers was getreden. Op woensdag mochten de medewerkers niet naar het circuit komen omdat het zeer hard regende en er meerdere plaatsen waren getroffen door overstromingen.

Formule 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali zag al snel dat er geen andere mogelijkheid was dan het annuleren van de Grand Prix in zijn thuisregio. In gesprek met Sky Sports 24 sprak Domenicali zich uit: "Toen ik op dinsdagavond op het circuit arriveerde zag ik dat er geen alternatieven waren. Bij een complex evenement zoals de Grand Prix heb je mensen, logistiek en services nodig. De baan zou wel goed genoeg zijn, maar er waren andere prioriteiten. Ik bracht het nieuws naar de teams en niemand was het ermee oneens."
