Alonso nam veel risico: "Bereikte een oncomfortabel niveau"

Fernando Alonso start de Grand Prix van Monaco vandaag vanaf de tweede startplaats. De Spanjaard leek de pole position al te hebben gepakt, maar Max Verstappen ging uiteindelijk net iets sneller. Alonso was tevreden met zijn rondje, maar gaf na afloop wel aan dat hij een enorme hoeveelheid risico had genomen.

Alonso kwam zeker niet slecht voor de dag in Monaco. De Aston Martin-coureur gaf voorafgaand het weekend al aan dat hij vol in de aanval zou gaan. In de kwalificatie deed hij dit ook en in Q3 perste hij er een aantal weergaloze rondjes uit. Alonso was dichtbij de pole position, maar Verstappen noteerde een bizarre laatste sector en kwalificeerde zich als snelste coureur van de dag.

Alonso nam tijdens de kwalificatie, net als veel andere coureurs, heel erg veel risico's. Een goede startplaats in Monaco is zeer belangrijk en Alonso besefte zich dat. Hij was wel van mening dat hij veel te ver ging, maar hij benaderde de kwalificatie niet op een andere manier dan hij normaal gesproken doet. Hij wordt geciteerd door Motorsportweek: "Ik benaderde de kwalificatie niet anders dan normaal. Ik denk dat ik in beide rondjes in Q3 het risico naar een oncomfortabel niveau tilde. Beide rondjes gingen over de limiet, maar het liep goed af."

    Dus de mensen die zeiden dat Alonso de pole verdiende en dat Max hem alleen maar won door super veel risico te nemen, kunnen zwijgen.

      Het klinkt ook niet logisch @TTT.Meer risico wordt beloond als het goed uitpakt. Zo niet, straft het zichzelf af. Max nam het risico, voerde het perfect uit en werd daarvoor beloond. Wie dat niet waardeert begrijpt niets van sport. Wie dat bagitaliseert, kan geen respect opbrengen voor uitzonderlijke prestaties.

      Het gat was minder dan 1 tiende. Dat is, gezien het verschil in materiaal, en ondanks dat het zo'n kort rondje is, een immense prestatie van Alonso.
      Kon je ook zien aan de opluchting en de blijdschap in de RBR garage. Die zagen ook dat dit de moeilijkste zou zijn.

    Alonso heeft uiteraard meer gezegd dan drie zinnetjes:

    “We came here with some concerns about our performance on Saturdays, we seem very god on Sundays and taking care of the tyres, degradation is good on our car. But we struggle a bit on street circuits to put the temperature to hit the lap in Q3 but we are starting the first row of the grid in Monaco so I think it’s job done today.”

    Alonso drew attention the time he lost to Verstappen in the final sector, adding that this has been the team’s most problematic area over the weekend.

    “I don’t think so,” he said when asked if he tried a different approach in qualifying. “I think both laps in Q3 we were increasing the level of risk to an uncomfortable level let’s say I think both laps were a little bit over the limit sometimes but everything went fine.

    “The last sector seems our weakest part of the circuit, I think already in FP3, we were eighth quickest I think there. So maybe there is something going on there we need to analyse a bit, maybe going into Singapore is the next opportunity we have.
    But yeah I think even if it feels very close the pole position we have to be happy.”

    15 championship races in Monaco have been won from second on the grid, and it has turned out to be a more virtuous starting spot than pole in the last 10 years.

    The two-time champion said it was “great” statistic to hear, and a race win is certainly not off the table going into Sunday’s race.

    “Let’s see, it’s a long race,’ explained Alonso. “I don’t think overtaking opportunities will come at all as it is Monaco.

    “But it is a very demanding race on the car, on the gearbox, on the brakes. There’s a lot of things to take care of over 78 laps so we have to focus, concentrate, be sharp on pit stop, strategy. Anything can happen; if an opportunity comes we will take it.”

    Having not taken a race win since 2013, Alonso is pleased that newer fans of Formula 1 can now see him competing at the front.

    “It feels great. I always had self-confidence on what I could do in terms of driving, over confidence sometimes but that’s part of my DNA probably.

    “But it is a proof maybe for people outside, they were a lot of new fans, maybe coming as well from 2014 or 15 or DTS or all these things that they only saw me fighting for Q3 or something like that, or retiring from the race with some smoke at the back.

    “Now I think they are surprised that they see me fighting toward a bit the front, for me it’s okay, I’m enjoying, but it is more enjoyable that new fans can see that we are fast.”

      Als particuliere boerenlul vraag ik me bij alle grootbanken af waar ik nu eigenlijk als klant voor betaal. Maar tegelijkertijd zit ik met mijn hypotheeklening toch lekker schijterig bij mijn vertrouwde huisbank, dus die doet onbewust kennelijk toch iets goed bij mij.

    Dit was sinds lange tijd en weer eens dat we de beste versies van Verstappen, Alonso, Leclerc, Hamilton hebben gezien. Wat een fantastische kwalificatie!

    Normaal gesproken neemt iemand wel genoegen met een tweede plek (Verstappen) in de kwalificatie, omdat in de race normaal gesproken de Red Bull snel genoeg is om in te halen. Hier niet. Alles op alles voor de pole. Iets wat we al lange tijd niet gezien hebben. Groot risico, groot genot!

      Dat is meestal in Monaco alleen gaat het de laatste jaren mis in Q3. En dit jaar leek de baan zelf steeds sneller te worden wat ik me van eerdere edities niet zo kan herinneren. Al met al ingrediënten voor een topkwalificatie.
