Verstappen opgelucht na zege: "Ik raakte de muur een paar keer"

Max Verstappen schreef vandaag de Grand Prix van Monaco op zijn naam. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur reed vrijwel de gehele race aan de leiding en kwam met een reusachtige voorsprong op nummer twee Fernando Alonso over de streep. Verstappen was na afloop vooral opgelucht.

Verstappen klaagde al vroeg in de race over problemen met zijn banden. Men koos er toch voor om Verstappen gewoon op de baan te houden. Het leek er immers stevig op dat er regen aan zou komen. Rond de 50ste ronde vielen er daadwerkelijk flinke buien en koos Verstappen al snel voor een setje inters.

Moeilijk

Na afloop van de race was Verstappen vooral opgelucht. Hij kwam dan wel met een grote voorsprong over de finish, maar hij had het niet makkelijk. Na afloop sprak hij zich uit bij interviewer van dienst David Coulthard: "Het was moeilijk want we reden op de mediums en Fernando reed op de hards. We wilden helemaal niet zolang op de baan blijven, maar we zagen dat de regen eraan kwam. De banden werden steeds slechter en het was heel moeilijk om door te blijven rijden. Toen begon het met regenen en gingen we naar de inters."

Glad

Verstappen was na afloop zeer blij met zijn zege in zijn woonplaats. Hij was vooral trots op zichzelf want het kleddernatte asfalt in Monaco gaf hem geen cadeautjes: "Het was enorm glad en als je zo'n grote voorsprong hebt wil je niet te hard pushen en ook niet te langzaam gaan. Ik raakte de muur een paar keer en het was echt enorm lastig, maar goed dat is nou eenmaal Monaco."

Ik kan me voorstellen dat hij niet te langzaam wil gaan, ook al heeft hij een ruime marge opgebouwd. Dan geraak je denk ik toch uit je concentratie. Je gaat daarna als het weer droger is, ook niet meer met dezelfde scherpte rijden. Althans dat is hoe ik er als totale nobody over denk :-)

Max over Portier...

"Het was bijzonder lastig. Als je aan de leiding rijdt, wil je in die omstandigheden niet al te veel risico nemen, maar tegelijkertijd wil je ook niet veel tijd verliezen. Ik heb de muur wel een paar keer geraakt, want het was gewoon extreem lastig. Maar goed, dat is Monaco", blijft Verstappen nog vrij koel.

"Ik blokkeerde de achterwielen bij dat ene momentje in Portier een beetje. Dat hield niet echt op, waardoor ik het met een beetje driften probeerde te controleren. Gelukkig heeft de muur een beetje geholpen om te voorkomen dat de auto nog verder zou glijden."

Onderaan de streep kan Verstappen een fraaie overwinning bijschrijven en is hij in het WK uitgelopen tot een voorsprong van 39 punten. "Ja, het is altijd mooi om deze race te winnen en al helemaal op de manier waarop we het vandaag hebben gedaan, ook met de regen erbij.
We zijn rustig gebleven, al met al is dit prachtig."

Hij heeft Perez gewoon gedeclasseerd. En een geweldige stint op de medium gereden. Aston Martin had het hem lastiger kunnen maken maar die wisselen doodleuk naar geel dus uiteindelijk zeer makkelijke zege.
