De Vries wil momentum vasthouden: "Blij dat we direct weer gaan racen"

Nyck de Vries reist met een goed gevoel af naar Spanje. De Nederlandse AlphaTauri-coureur kende in Monaco een foutloos weekend en wil zijn goede vorm graag vasthouden. De Vries stond in de afgelopen weken onder grote druk en hij is er dan ook op gebrand om goed te presteren in Spanje.

De Vries finishte in Monaco voor zijn teamgenoot Yuki Tsunoda en maakte in het gehele weekend vrijwel geen fouten. De Friese coureur pakte weliswaar geen WK-punten, maar hij nam wel veel positieve punten mee vanuit de race. Het was een fikse opsteker aangezien hij in de races daarvoor wat minder voor de dag kwam en er zelfs geruchten waren over een mogelijke exit bij het team.

Updates

De Vries wil in Spanje dan ook weer goed gaan presteren op het circuit nabij de stad Barcelona. De Nederlander spreekt zich uit in een persbericht van zijn team: "Ik ben blij dat we direct weer kunnen gaan racen aangezien we een aantal positieve punten kunnen meenemen uit Monaco, ook al waren de resultaten niet zo als we hadden gehoopt. Ik had een goed weekend zonder fouten. Het was mijn beste kwalificatie en qua performance waren we dichterbij de top tien dan eerst. We hadden daar al updates op de auto zitten, maar we zullen in Spanje zien of de cijfers uit Monaco representatief zijn."

Barcelona

De Vries kijkt uit naar de Spaanse Grand Prix. De AlphaTauri-coureur kent de baan goed en hij was er in het verleden ook succesvol: "Ik heb al veel tijd doorgebracht op het circuit in Barcelona, ik heb er gereden in de GP3 en ik won er in 2019 de Sprint in de Formule 2. In het jaar daarvoor werd ik tweede in de Feature Race. Iedereen heeft heel erg veel data aangezien het altijd het testcircuit was. Ik vind het een leuk circuit, het is een typische Europese baan en het Spaanse publiek is altijd heel erg enthousiast."

Die wagen was tot Monaco ook niet in staat om mee in de punten te rijden.
Ik zie Nyck het hier echter ook niet doen. Als Yuki een goede bandenstrategie krijgt, want dat hapert er bij SAT nog wel eens aan, zie ik Yuki zeer zeker in de punten rijden.

Nu is Monaco niet altijd het beste circuit om te bekijken of updates goed werken, maar mijn eerste indruk van de upgrade is dat de Alpha Tauri een stuk sneller is geworden dan de eerste 3 races. Yuki kwalificeerde zich al in Q3, en ook Nyck zat er beter bij dan de eerste 3 races. Barcelona wordt dan ook de grote test, maar ik denk dat Alpha Tauri zich sowieso losgerukt heeft van Williams, Alfa Romeo en Haas (de 3 zwakste teams nu).

Het wordt wel zaak voor Nyck dat hij een keer het hele weekend sneller is dan Yuki en punten pakt. Op dit circuit met zijn ervaring zou dat ook goed moeten kunnen.
En dan geen geneuzel en positief doen als hij bijvoorbeeld 11e of 12e wordt en geneuzel over "momentum". Punten pakken is het enige waar je tevreden mee mag zijn komend weekend!

Nyck was ooit een talent maar wellicht te veel/lang in middenklassen geracet.. of was niet eens een groot talent from the beginning. Hoe dan ook, te licht voor F1. Een beetje Mick Schumacher level die misschien zelfs beter is qua pure snelheid.

  Uiteindelijk heeft bijna iedereen die de F2 of F1 haalt wel een vorm van talent. Maar met alleen talent kom je er niet. Je moet wel boven het maaiveld uit kunnen steken óf heel veel geld hebben óf commercieel gezien (kijk naar Mick) een interessante keuze zijn. Stroll en Mick Schumacher zijn echt niet beter dan De Vries, maar hebben in dit geval hun papa en achternaam mee.

  Ik krijg het bijna niet mijn strot uit maar dan doe je Stroll te kort. Die is incidenteel wel eens goed (regen), Nyck en Mick zijn op zijn hoogst middelmatig.

  Absoluut. Geld en connecties zijn in dit geval een must. Maar puur kijkend naar prestaties, lastig te zeggen dat hij veel meer talent heeft dan die andere twee. Ok, vooruit, misschien net ietsje meer maar tot nu toe niks gezien. En ik geloof niet in principe geef-hem-meer-tijd enz. Echte talent zou Tsunoda vanaf de eerste meters het heel moeilijk maken. Tsunoda, Damon.. :-)
