Horner lacht om boordradio-discussie Verstappen: "Net een oud stel"

Max Verstappen schreef afgelopen weekend op zeer indrukwekkende wijze de Spaanse Grand Prix op zijn naam. Hij reed de gehele race aan de leiding en ging in de slotfase, ondanks track limits-waarschuwingen, op jacht naar de snelste ronde. Zijn engineer was daar iets minder blij mee. Teambaas Christian Horner kan er wel om lachen en vergelijkt de twee een met oud getrouwd stel.

Verstappen startte de Spaanse Grand Prix vanaf de pole position en daarna reed hij een redelijk eenzame race. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur ging in de laatste fase van de race bijna de fout in. Hij overschreed meerdere keren de track limits waarna hij de waarschuwingsvlag kreeg. Zijn engineer gaf aan dat hij moest opletten, maar Verstappen reed alsnog de snelste raceronde.

Oud stel

Verstappens engineer Gianpiero Lambiase probeerde Verstappen duidelijk te maken dat hij vooral op de track limits moest letten en niet op de snelste ronde. Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner zag het gebeuren en reageerde grappend bij Sky Sports: "Max en zijn engineer hebben een band als een oud getrouwd stel. Je kon ze over de boordradio horen, alsof ze het oneens waren over welk tv-programma ze wilden kijken. Hij kreeg drie waarschuwingen, daarna zou er een tijdstraf volgen. Als er een Safety Car was geweest, had dat enorm pijnlijk kunnen zijn."

Niet op de hoogte

Horner kan er achteraf dus wel om lachen, maar hij benadrukt wel dat Verstappen een groot risico nam. Volgens Horner waren de zorgen van Lambiase namelijk wel terecht: "De engineer probeert Max in bedwang te houden door te zeggen dat hij geen risico moet nemen en dat hij binnen de lijnen moet blijven. Max was er volgens mij niet echt van op de hoogte dat hij over de track limits ging. Hij wilde gewoon het extra punt voor de snelste ronde."

Grootste highlight van de race: Het gesprek tussen Max en GP over de track limits. De hele wereld heeft het erover en het gaat overal viraal. Ik had het niet meegekregen want ik was in slaap gevallen, baal er wel van, had het graag mee willen krijgen live.
