Steiner accepteert Hülkenberg-straf: "Niemand heeft gevaar gelopen"

Nico Hülkenberg was één van de grote helden van de kwalificatie in Canada. De Duitse Haas-coureur had geluk met de timing van zijn vliegende ronde in Q3 en reed de tweede tijd. Diep in de avond ging hij van hero naar zero toen de stewards hem een gridstraf van drie plaatsen gaven. Haas-teambaas Günther Steiner is desalniettemin trots.

Hülkenberg reed vlak voor de rode vlag zijn snelle tijd. Vlak nadat er met de rode vlag werd gezwaaid vanwege de crash van Oscar Piastri, was Hülkenberg volgens de stewards de fout ingegaan. Hülkenberg zou te snel hebben gereden tijdens de code rood, maar ze meldden ook dat er overduidelijk verwarring was bij Haas over hoe snel de Duitser mocht rijden.

Geen gevaar

Haas-teambaas Günther Steiner was vanzelfsprekend teleurgesteld. De Italiaan is echter alsnog enorm trots op zijn team en Hülkenberg. In gesprek met RaceFans spreekt Steiner zich uit over de zaak: "De gridstraf van vanavond neemt niets weg van de prestatie van ons team. In ons hoofd zijn we nog steeds tweede. Ja, we maakten een fout. We reden gewoon te hard. Maar, we moeten ook onthouden dat niemand gevaar heeft gelopen. Nico reed de hele tijd alleen rond."

Foutje

Steiner was opvallend mild over het oordeel van de stewards. Hij kreeg in Spanje een reprimande vanwege stevige kritiek op de stewards en was nu dus uiterst kalm en correct: "Het was natuurlijk tegen de regels, maar het was gewoon een foutje en er werd geen gevaar gecreëerd. We hebben deze gridstraf nu gekregen en dat moeten we accepteren. We gaan de baan op en we gaan ons best doen. Misschien hebben we lady luck een keertje aan onze kant staan."

Alonso noemt het ' a beautiful challenge' om tegen Max te racen.

Te hard rijden onder rood is normaal 10 plaatsen straf. Er kunnen mensen op de baan lopen, dus daar zijn ze streng op. Gezien de discussie over de radio heeft HULK waarschijnlijk maar 3 plekken straf gekregen.
Het was een erg domme fout van het team, slecht gecoacht.
