Alonso en Stroll hopen Oostenrijks Grand Prix-weekend te vergeten: "Hebben huiswerk te doen"

In tegenstelling tot vrijwel elke eerdere Grand Prix van 2023, worstelde het Formule 1-team van Aston Martin om bij het raceweekend in Spielberg een sterk resultaat neer te zetten. Naast de dominante Red Bull en het daaropvolgende team was het niet Aston Martin, maar McLaren die zichzelf in de top drie kon laten gelden. Coureurs Fernando Alonso en Lance Stroll hameren erop dat hun team aan de bak zal moeten om zichzelf voor de aankomende races te herstellen.

Van beide coureurs weet vooral Fernando Alonso uitstekende resultaten te behalen: van de eerste acht Grands Prix was de Spanjaard maar liefst zesmaal op het podium te zien. Maar bij het Oostenrijkse Grand Prix-weekend kon het succes niet voortgezet worden. Terwijl Alonso met een oorspronkelijke zesde plaats genoegen moest nemen – dat vanwege een verlate tracklimitpenalty voor Carlos Sainz hem naar een P5-finish promoveerde – kon Lance Stroll om dezelfde reden zijn tiende finishplaats naar een P9 transformeren. Een degelijk resultaat, maar niet genoeg, menen beide mannen.

"Net zoals vorig jaar was Aston ook dit jaar niet snel in Oostenrijk. Haas was net zoals vorig jaar ook dit jaar snel, dus er is wel degelijk een soort overeenkomst in de prestaties van sommige teams op te merken", begint tweevoudig wereldkampioen Alonso. "Echter moeten we leren begrijpen waarom we hier tekortkomen, zodat we volgend jaar niet weer terugkomen en opnieuw langzaam zijn."

Vooral teamgenoot Stroll kan terugkijken op wat voor hem een tegenvallend resultaat is in Spielberg. "We verloren veel tijd met de onfortuinlijke timing van de safety car. Volgens mij verloor ik zo'n vijf posities, en vanaf dat moment moest ik mezelf terug naar boven vechten."

Wat betreft de tekortkomingen van Aston Martin op het gebied van snelheid, beaamt de Canadees de woorden van Alonso: "We moeten hier zeker naar gaan kijken, want dit was niet onze meest sterke dag. Voor volgende week hebben we zeker wat huiswerk liggen", concludeert Stroll.

  Overigens begreep ik uit het geruchtencircuit dat Red Bull met een nieuwe vloer komt die 3 tinede zou moeten geven en de issue dat ze op sommige banen niet voldoende temperatuur in de banden zouden krijgen. Dit laatste helpt vooral Perez die daar extreme issues mee heeft.

  @Ron, ik heb er vanavond een paar gehad. Durf niet te zeggen dat het weer werkt, want de afgelopen dagen kreeg ik ook een paar per dag, terwijl ik er tien keer zoveel had moeten hebben. Even afwachten.
