Polesitter Verstappen spreekt van bizarre kwalificatie: "Enorm hectisch"

Max Verstappen pakte vandaag een felbevochte pole position op het circuit van Silverstone. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur kreeg het zeker niet cadeau en moest de verrassende McLarens van zich af slaan in de laatste fase van de kwalificatie. Verstappen was na afloop zeer blij met zijn resultaat.

Verstappen gold als de topfavoriet in de Britse kwalificatie. Bij de start van de sessie had hij het echter moeilijk aangezien er veel coureurs veel sneller voor de dag kwamen dan van te voren werd verwacht. Verstappen ging er daarna goed voor zitten en noteerde in zijn eerste run in Q3 een snelle tijd. Tot ieders verrassing reed Lando Norris daarna een rappe tijd, maar Verstappen stelde orde op zaken.

Bizar

Na afloop van de kwalificatie verscheen Verstappen met een grote grijns op zijn gezicht voor de microfoon van interviewer van dienst Jenson Button: "Het was een bizarre kwalificatiesessie. Het was enorm hectisch en op sommige delen van de baan was het ook heel erg glad. We reden onze rondjes in Q3 en ik was verrast om die twee hier te zien. Het is leuk om te zien voor McLaren, ik ben blij dat ze aast ons mogen staan."

Pushen

De kwalificatie werd verreden op een opdrogende baan, maar tijdens de sessie leek het er voortdurend op dat er toch nog een regenbui zou vallen. Verstappen probeerde zich daar niet zo druk om te maken: "In Q1 en Q2 waren er zeker nog een paar natte plekken om de baan. We zochten soms iets teveel de limiet op, maar we weten dat we een goede auto hebben dus we hoefden dat niet te doen."

  nou, gele sector in je laatste Q3 ronde, nadat de eerste sector al niet paars was. De kleurtjes zeggen niet alles, maar het oogde daardoor wel extra spannend.

  Ik heb even gekeken, hupholland.
  Ik heb de snelste rone van Norris en Verstappen over elkaar gelegd.
  Tot 1600 meter wisselde wie voorop lag voor pole. Na 1600 meter was het altijd Verstappen. Ik kan dat niet anders maken.
  Van 2500 meter tot ca 3300 meter liep de tijd een klein stukje terug. Dat was 8 honderdste. Daarna liep de voorsprong gestaag verder op.
  
  Heb het elders al gezegd. De Red Bull was op de rechte stukken verre van de snelste auto. Bijna alle top 10 rijders waren op de rechte stukken sneller. In ieder geval dan Verstappen. Perez heb ik niet bekeken, want die blijft op het moment ver achter de top 10.
  
  Het leek dus spannend, maar het was eigenlijk vanaf 1600 meter in de ronde overduidelijk dat Verstappen pole ging halen. Ook al was sector 2 voor Verstappen dan een gele sector. Het verschil was marginaal ten opzichte van het rondje er voor. 1 duizendste langzamer is ook een gele sector. Het is een conditie. Het geeft niet aan dat het een zwakke sector is.

  ja, zag het achteraf ook, Verstappen was in elke sector net ff wat sneller dan Norris. Maar live kon ik dat niet zien, zag alleen groen en geel en er stond ook geen splittijd bij. Zoals ik al zei, de kleurtjes zeggen niet alles, maar van groen en geel paars maken is vaak wel lastig ;)
