Video: Hoe Hamilton won in Silverstone op drie wielen

Voor Lewis Hamilton was er tijdens de Grand Prix van Silverstone in 2020 geen vuiltje aan de lucht in zijn jacht op de zege in zijn thuisrace. Toch ging het bijna mis voor de zevenvoudig kampioen in zijn Mercedes.

In de allerlaatste ronde plofte de linkervoorband van Lewis Hamilton en de Brit moest alle zeilen bijzetten om de wagen op de baan te houden. De stercoureur had logischerwijs geen tijd meer voor een pitstop en moest het volhouden op het overige rubber.

Met dertig seconden voorsprong op Max Verstappen waggelde Hamilton voor het oog van zijn thuispubliek richting de finishlijn. Doordat de Mercedes-auto schuurde over de grond zorgde dat voor veel vonken en vooral spectaculaire beelden.

Verstappen kwam razendsnel dichterbij en het Engelse publiek zat met dichtgeknepen billen. Gaat Hamilton het wel halen? Toch bleef hijzelf kalm in de cockpit en reed stoïcijns. Met nog maar een voorsprong van minder zes seconden won Hamilton de Britse GP, maar het scheelde een haartje of alles was plotsklaps voor niets geweest.

    Dit zegt ook veel over het jaar 2021. Wanneer Max achter je zat, was er geen ruimte voor een pitstop of foutjes, moest je racen voor wat je waard was, elke sec. telde, iedereen in het team moest uiterst geconcentreerd zijn. Merc. zat hier duidelijke over het randje, en zelfs dat was nodig om van Max te winnen. Ja 2021 was een historisch jaar.

      Klopt, toen moest Max de wedstrijd uitkijken in het ziekenhuis.

      In 2021 ging MB inderdaad over het randje in de race op dit circuit.

      In 2020 was het cruisen voor MB. Ik dacht dat Max een werk later in 2020 wel de broodkruimels kreeg op dit curcuit.

    Het bewijs dat je de dat puntje voor de snelste ronde gewoon links moet laten liggen (tenzij je echt in een spannend titelgevecht zit). Zonder die stop had Max de wedstrijd gewoon gewonnen.

      Dat kun je niet met zekerheid zeggen. In hetzelfde geval was die band van Max dan ook ontploft. Dat was het risico dat Mercedes nam en Red Bull niet.

      als je er gewoon standaard geen extra stop voor maakt heeft het niks met achteraf wonen te maken. Je moet gewoon zo snel mogelijk naar de finish toe, dat moet het uitgangspunt zijn. En een kans op de overwinning lijkt me meer waard dan het veilig stellen van P2 (Leclerc zat er een eeuwigheid achter).
