Wolff legt betrokkenheid filmproject uit: "Hebben Brad Pitt naar een raceschool gestuurd"

In Silverstone werden afgelopen weekend de opnames van de nieuwe Formule 1-film afgetrapt. De filmmakers nemen de zaakjes zeer serieus en hebben de beschikking over omgebouwde Formule 2-wagens en een eigen pitbox. Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff geeft aan dat zijn team hoofdrolspeler Brad Pitt naar een raceschool heeft gestuurd.

Het filmproject met Hollywoodster Brad Pitt en Damson Idris in de hoofdrollen maakte de tongen los in Silverstone. Ze hadden een eigen pitbox, pitmuur, aangepaste auto's en de acteurs reden zelfs een aantal rondjes op de baan tussen de sessies door. Ook op de startgrid was het team aanwezig. Pitt en Idris stonden naast Max Verstappen bij het volkslied en twee professionele coureurs reden een paar bochten mee in de opwarmronde.

Raceschool

Het 'elfde team' wil een realistische film maken over de Formule 1. Mercedes-coureur is dan ook betrokken bij het project, ook zijn team werkt mee. Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff legt het uit bij Motorsport.com: "We hebben Brad Pitt naar een raceschool in Frankrijk gestuurd, daar heeft hij zich vanaf Formule 4-auto's omhoog gewerkt. Lewis probeert vanuit zijn rol de film zo realistisch mogelijk te maken. Frédéric Vasseur kwam met het idee om Formule 2-auto's om te bouwen. Wij hebben geholpen de pitmuur en de pitbox zo realistisch mogelijk te maken. We hebben veel gelachen, maar ik denk dat we een goede verhaallijn hebben."

Wolff is in ieder geval blij met de inspanningen van de filmmakers. De Oostenrijker ziet dat de filmploeg op veel gebieden kijkt naar de realiteit. Wolff kan daar ook om lachen: "Ik sprak een paar weken geleden met de regisseur en toen vroeg ik waar hij was. Ik dacht dat hij zou antwoorden dat hij ergens in Hollywood zat, maar hij zat in zijn appartement in Brackley! Het leven van een regisseur gaat dus niet over rozen!"

Persoonlijk denk ik niet dat ik ernaar ga kijken. Formule 1 is voor mij de actie en de adrenaline op het moment of het herbeleven van de acties van vroeger van de echte helden. Voor mijn gevoel weer een onderdeel van de poppenkast van Liberty Media en het strelen van Lewis' ego.

Persoonlijk denk ik niet dat ik ernaar ga kijken. Formule 1 is voor mij de actie en de adrenaline op het moment of het herbeleven van de acties van vroeger van de echte helden. Voor mijn gevoel weer een onderdeel van de poppenkast van Liberty Media en het strelen van Lewis' ego.

  De film over Hunt en Lauda vond ik echt heel leuk, wie weet maken ze wel iets moois van deze film, ik ga dus zeker kijken en als ie goed is dan is dat alleen maar leuk.
  
  Pitt vind ik ook een geweldige acteur, maar ik heb niks met sterren verering buiten de film om, net zo min als met F coureurs buiten hun racerij dingen.

  De film RUSH (uitgebracht in 2013) gaf toch een prachtig kijkje in de strijd tussen Lauda en Hunt gedurende het F1 seizoen van 1976.
  
  Ook LE MANS '66 (Ford vs Ferrari uitgebracht in 2019), over de strijd voor de winst in Le Mans van de twee merken, vond ik wel een pareltje dat het kijken de moeite waard was.
  
  Ik ben echter bang dat, in de huidige tijd van computer animated movies, dat het een "over the top" film gaat worden zoals DAYS OF THUNDER (Tom Cruise 1990) of DRIVEN (Sylvester Stallone 2001) maar ik ga hem sowieso bekijken.

Vreemd, in het interview met Sky vertelde Brad Pitt dat hij slechts circuit ervaringen heeft met motoren en die kennis heeft gebruikt om de race lijnen te vinden.
Hij had verder nog nooit in een raceauto gezeten.
