De succesvolle vuurdoop van Ricciardo voor Red Bull

Daniel Ricciardo is elf jaar later weer in dienst van het zusterteam van Red Bull, AlphaTauri. Aanstaande zondag tijdens de Grand Prix maakt de zevenvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar zijn rentree bij de wedstrijd in Hongarije.

Zijn debuut - toentertijd heette de renstal Scuderia Toro Rosso - was zeer succesvol. Bij zijn thuisrace op het semi-stratencircuit in Melbourne scoorde de Australiër meteen twee punten dankzij een negende plek.

In de kwalificatie was Ricciardo direct zijn teamgenoot Jean-Eric Vergne de baas. Hij mocht zelfs naar Q3, terwijl de garage daarnaast die boot net miste. Bij de strijd om pole met de tien snelste rijders zette Ricciardo geen tijd.

Vanaf P10 lagen punten in het verschiet, maar na bocht één zag dat er niet naar uit. Ricciardo werd naar achteren geworpen door een startincident en een droomdebuut voor STR in zijn thuisrace leek al kansloos voordat de race al onderweg was.

Door verschillende neutralisaties was er voor de jonge Australiër weer licht aan het einde van de tunnel en kon door deze onderbrekingen zich unlappen en weer aansluiten bij de rest.

Vanaf daar maakte Ricciardo veel terrein goed en punten lonkte bij het ingaan van de allerlaatste ronde. Sergio Pérez op de zevende plaats met daarachter Nico Rosberg, Kimi Räikkönen en Jean-Éric Vergne reden voor Ricciardo.

Rosberg maakte contact met Pérez bij het naderen van de snelle chicane in bocht 11 en 12, waardoor Räikkönen hen beiden kon inhalen. Vergne maakte een fout in bocht 13, opende de deur voor di Resta en Ricciardo om hem te passeren, en de twee vochten om de negende plaats. Ricciardo won dat gevecht en scoorde na een uitzichtloze situatie twee punten.

"Die laatste ronde was gekkenhuis", begon Ricciardo na afloop van de Australische Grand Prix. "Ik heb geen idee wat er allemaal was gebeurd vanaf ronde 1 tot en met 58."
