Exit De Vries en terugkomst Ricciardo geeft Verstappen dubbel gevoel: "Zo gaat dat in dit wereldje"

Bij de start van de Hongaarse Grand Prix zal er een nieuw (maar toch bekend) gezicht in de AT04-bolide van de onlangs ontslagen Nyck de Vries zitten. Daniel Ricciardo is terug van weggeweest, en zal na een pauze van een half jaar weer deel van de Formule 1 uitmaken. De storm rondom AlphaTauri en haar coureurswisseling heeft regerend Max Verstappen een dubbel gevoel gegeven, vertelt hij voorafgaand de race op de Hungaroring.

Daniel Ricciardo's terugkomst in de Formule 1, en dan notabene ook nog bij de Red Bull-familie, maakt Max Verstappen blij. De regerend wereldkampioen meent de capriolen van zijn voormalig teamgenoot erg te hebben gemist, maar vertelt tegelijkertijd over zijn teleurstelling van de exit van landgenoot en vriend Nyck de Vries.

"Het is geweldig om Daniel (Ricciardo) weer terug op de grid en in de familie te hebben. Ik wilde eigenlijk nooit dat hij wegging. We weten dat we het goed met elkaar kunnen vinden. Als Daniel het nu goed doet op de plek waar hij zit, dan bestaat er de mogelijkheid voor hem om weer terug omhoog te gaan, toch? Dus het ligt allemaal open om eerlijk te zijn."

"Maar aan de andere kant ben ik ook goede vrienden met Nyck (De Vries). Ik vind het jammer dat hij weg is uit de Formule 1. Maar zo gaat dat helaas in dit wereldje."

"Volgens mij is er geen onenigheid tussen de coureurs, want zo gaan die dingen nou eenmaal. Het hoofdstuk moet afgesloten worden. Buiten de Formule 1 zijn er genoeg andere kansen te benutten, en ik twijfel er niet over dat iedereen weer op een goede plek terechtkomt. Nu heeft Daniel weer de kans gekregen om zichzelf te bewijzen."

Volgens Verstappen zal De Vries elders in de motorsport een passend plekje vinden: "Veel mensen denken dat als je niet in de F1 slaagt, dat alle hoop dan is verloren. Zo werkt dat niet. Er zijn zoveel andere geweldige raceklasses. Ik weet dat hij genoeg kansen zal hebben. Ik heb hem vorige week nog gesproken, en hij zal ongetwijfeld weer bij een goed team in een ander kampioenschap landen", sluit Verstappen af.
