Steiner vindt rookies in huidig F1-klimaat groot risico

Haas F1-teambaas Guenther Steiner vindt het aannemen van rookies een groot risico in het huidige F1-klimaat.

Volgens de Italiaan kan ervaring miljoenen schelen, hoewel er altijd uitzonderingen zijn zoals met Oscar Piastri die goed presteert en de ervaren Nyck de Vries die tegenviel.

"Waar de Formule 1 nu staat, is potentiële kwaliteit essentieel", vertelde hij aan de Deense site Ekstra Bladet. "Je moet iemand vinden die echt heel goed is."

Neem Oscar Piastri op Silverstone. Hij is duidelijk uitzonderlijk. Maar dan neem je Nyck. Nyck de Vries is geen slechte coureur. Maar hij heeft het niet gehaald."

AlphaTauri besloot om de ervaren Daniel Ricciardo terug te nemen. Steiner denkt dat de keuze op een oudere rot mede komt omdat Haas F1 Nico Hulkenberg aantrok met groot succes tot gevolg.

“Ze halen hem terug die vorig jaar niet heeft gepresteerd waartoe hij in staat was, dat zal hij zelf toegeven. Ik denk ook dat ze hem hebben teruggebracht omdat het bij ons werkte."

Veel teams verkiezen dus ervaring boven talent volgens Steiner. "Het wordt steeds moeilijker voor rookies om in deze sport te komen. Alle teams zijn nu goed. We hebben geen backmarkers meer."

Hij vervolgt zijn betoog: "Het is zo belangrijk voor de teams om goede en ervaren coureurs te hebben en het is zelfs nog belangrijker omdat we zo dicht bij elkaar staan."

"Niemand zal een rookie meer een stoel geven voor 10-15 miljoen dollar. Je kunt 10-15 miljoen winnen met een plaats op de ranglijst. Het is het niet meer waard."

Dit heeft gevolgen voor nieuwe aanwas volgens de Italiaan "Het zal dus nog moeilijker worden om nieuw talent van de F2 naar de F1 te krijgen. Omdat niemand het risico durft te nemen."

"Kijk naar Aston Martin, ze pakten een 41-jarige met een fantastisch resultaat. Haas pakte Hulkenberg. Het ging niet zo goed met AlphaTauri, maar zij deden hetzelfde [met Nyck].”

    Hij vergeet nog even Sargeant te noemen. Waar Albon mooie resultaten laat zien in de Williams, staat de teller voor Sargeant nog op nul en dat kan in de strijd om P7 in het kampioenschap heel veel geld kosten.

      Ik hoop niet dat Williams Mick er volgend seizoen in gaat zetten, ga er maar vanuit dat Toto hard ermee bezig is.

      vraag het me of, Toto is nl niet gek en als hij ziet dat Mick in de sim en in de testen onvoldoende niveau toont dan zal hij hem echt niet bij Williams aanbieden. Zie hem eerder met MB junior Frederick Vesti gaan leuren...(en dat hoop ik ook)

      Nyck de Vries stond ook tijden naast Toto, beetje zelfde nu als Mick, als Toto het zo goed wist had hij wel Nyck advies gegeven om in de FE te blijven rijden.

      volgens mij zijn ze Grosjean in de Indycar inmiddels ook wel een beetje zat...

      veel incidenten daar, heeft dezelfde reputatie inmiddels als hij in de F2 had.

      Heb wel moeten lachen om de immer subtiele Will Power onlangs over Grosjean, ik citeer;

      "Grosjean is a piece of crap, If you saw what he did in practice, he needs a punch in the face.”

    Echt talent kan je prima in een f1 auto zetten maar steiner heeft het meer over paydrivers en coureurs met een marketingplan. Schumacher heeft hij niet genomen voor zijn kwaliteiten maar voor de naam. Logan zit er voor de amerikaanse markt laffiti destijds voor het geld. De vries had geen ervaring in de F1 alleen in de gp2 en fe met 1 invalbeurt. In de gp2 werd hij niet als echt talent gezien maar als laatbloeier die kon winnen toen de echte talenten vertrokken waren. Dan red je het dus niet op topniveau. Ik denk alleen dat er op dit moment een gebrek aan talent in de lagere klasses is. Liam is ook niet van het kaliber piastri.

      Precies, bij een gebrek aan talent kreeg De Vries een kans.
      En bij Ricciardo hebben ze enkel de hoop dat hij eventueel Perez kan vervangen, dat wordt nu uitgetest en heeft niets met Haas te maken.
      RB zet sowieso geen rookie in het A-team.

    Voor een Haas snap ik die redenering wel.

    Anderzijds moet je als 'Rookie' wel ergens de kans krijgen. Waarom anders investeren in de race -jeugd?
    Topteams zullen altijd de beste piloten aantrekken. De 'kleinere' teams moeten soms durven en ietwat berekende risico's nemen. Max was, ondanks dat het talent er van spatte, ook een risico voor RedBull. Met dat verschil dat ze het risico wegnamen door hem in een TR te plaatsen.

    Over Haas gesproken verwacht ik dat Kevin en Nico gewoonweg volgend jaar ook in de wagens zitten. Wel denk ik dat Kevin zich in '24 toch wat zal moeten (her)bewijzen.

    Waarom noemt hij De Vries nu, die heeft toch anders genoeg schade gereden in de paar weekenden. Maar er zijn inderdaad uitzonderingen en het is deels de coureur, maar ik denk dat het ook deel de begeleiding is van een rookie.

      Ik denk dat de F1 teams wel moeten opletten om 'rookies' niet meteen op te branden en een soort van wegwerpcultuur - zoals de hedendaagse maatschappij meer en meer vertoond - volgt. De budgetcap is een strikte (ahum) aflijning en elke crash heeft sinds vorig jaar een significante impact.

      Tegelijk zijn er veel minder testmogelijkheden en wordt er meer dan ooit meer verwacht van de jonge leeuwen. En rijpen in F2 is voor de meesten niet genoeg om meteen te presteren in de F1. Er was een korte tijd dat Max 'crashstappen' werd genoemd, en kijk nu...

      Puur talent en een sterke werkethiek komen altijd bovendrijven, maar ik hoop dat de jonge leeuwen van morgen de tijd krijgen om te groeien en te tonen wat ze in hun mars hebben.
