Alonso beleefde 'stressvolle' kwalificatie op Spa

De kwalificatie op Spa-Francorchamps was erg verraderlijk. Zelfs de zeer ervaren Fernando Alonso moest na afloop even bijkomen van de hectische sesie. De Aston Martin-coureur werd uiteindelijk negende en eindigde voor teammaat Lance Stroll.

"De sessie was stressvol", begon de tweevoudig kampioen. "Elke ronde was anders - je moest je voortdurend aanpassen aan de veranderende grip. Je moest de auto vertrouwen - we namen de bochten elke ronde sneller en sneller, dus het was een beetje een gok."

Alonso was begin 2023 voornamelijk vooraan te vinden. Nu was de Spanjaard al tevreden met een plekje in het laatste segment.

"We kwamen door Q1 en Q2, wat een van onze belangrijkste doelen was. Q3 was extreem krap - we waren een paar tienden langzamer dan de zevende plaats, wat waarschijnlijk het maximale was dat we vandaag hadden kunnen bereiken."

Dat de Spanjaard niet verder kwam dan de negende positie lag niet aan de bolide. "Ik denk dat de AMR23 zich vandaag goed gedroeg: we missen nog steeds die laatste paar tienden van onze belangrijkste concurrenten. Vooral tijdens een vliegende ronde - maar hopelijk kunnen we zondag wat van dat tempo herstellen", sloot Alonso af.
