Verstappen nam geen risico's: "Maar alsnog pole, dat telt"

Max Verstappen pakte zojuist de eerste startplek voor de Sprint van later vandaag. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur hield het hoofd koel in de uitgestelde Sprint Shootout en was uiteindelijk net ietsje sneller dan de verrassende nummer twee Oscar Piastri. Verstappen was tevreden met zijn resultaat.

Na een flinke regenbui kwam Verstappen als snelste boven drijven op het circuit van Spa-Francorchamps in België. De Nederlander merkte dat de tijd krap was en kwam met nog maar twee seconden te gaan over de streep om aan zijn snelle run te beginnen. Heel eventjes droomde Oscar Piastri van een Sprint Pole, maar Verstappen was uiteindelijk niet ietsje sneller dan de Australiër.

Verstappen mag dan ook aan de Sprint gaan beginnen vanaf de best mogelijke startplek. De Nederlandse coureur was tevreden en sprak zich na de Sprint uit bij interviewster van dienst Naomi Schiff: "Ja, het was best lastig op de baan. Ik denk dat wij goed rustig zijn gebleven. Het gat was dit keer niet zo groot als het gisteren was, maar er was ook geen echte aanleiding om heel erg veel risico's te nemen. Ik deed voorzichtig in de tweede sector, maar we hebben de pole en dat is wat telt."

Russell haalde Hamilton nog in bij de chicane en zat toen te dicht achter Norris. Daardoor kwam Russell al 15 km/u te langzaam over start/finish bij het begin van zijn ronde. Dat maakte het lastiger voor Russell om zijn rempunt te bepalen en verremde zich meteen ook bij de eerste bocht.

      Geen idee of het payback was, maar sowieso dom van Mercedes om hun coureurs zo dichtbij elkaar te laten pushen in natte omstandigheden

      Overigens verloor Hamilton nagenoeg niks. Hij moest heel even van zijn gas, maar het voordeel van de slipstream compenseert dat volledig.

    Ik denk persoonlijk dat Max het mooie van deze Sprint Pole vindt is dat hij er heel mooi Pirelli petje eraan heeft overgehouden....

    Max vertelde net bij Sky dat hij rustig naar de grote schermen naast de baan zat te kijken, om zo laat mogelijk (2 seconden te gaan) aan zijn snelle ronde te beginnen. En dat hij rustig aan had gedaan in sector 2, omdat de bull er daar nog erg vochtig (very tricky) bij lag.
