Horner stelt fans gerust: Terugkomst Ricciardo niet vanwege moeilijkheden Pérez

Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner wil het nogmaals benadrukken: de comeback van Daniel Ricciardo om de ontslagen Nyck de Vries bij zusterteam AlphaTauri te vervangen, heeft geen dubbele agenda. De verrassende coureurswisseling vond plaats op het moment dat Sergio Pérez, coureur van het hoofdteam Red Bull, in een performancedip verkeerde.

Sergio Pérez begon het 2023-seizoen van de Formule 1 op sterke wijze. De RB19-bolide van Red Bull was alleenstaand wat betreft haar dominante performance op het asfalt, en zodoende zag Pérez in de beginfase van het jaar zijn kans schoon om het gevecht naar teamgenoot Max Verstappen te brengen.

Maar, sinds de kwalificatiesessie in de straten van Monte Carlo, leek de Mexicaan zich niet meer comfortabel in de openwielbolide te voelen. En dat was te zien: terwijl Verstappen pole position na pole position aaneenreeg, wist Pérez bij een reeks van vijf Grands Prix niet verder dan een elfde startplaats te komen. En in diezelfde periode vond nou juist de coureurswisseling bij AlphaTauri plaats.

Volgens vele stemmen in en rond de Formule 1-paddock had de komst van comeback-kid Daniel Ricciardo dan ook een dubbele betekenis. Zo zou Red Bull de tegenvallende Nyck de Vries kunnen vervangen, terwijl de Oostenrijkse renstal tegelijkertijd het vuur aan de schenen van Pérez zou kunnen leggen. Tegenover Speedcafe vertelt Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner dat dit echter niet het geval is.

"Ik wou Daniel (Ricciardo) maar al te graag terug zien komen. We hebben we afgelopen zeven maanden er hard aan gewerkt om hem weer te versterken en om de oude Daniel terug te krijgen. Het was altijd al ons plan om hem die bandentest (in Silverstone) te laten doen, zodat we konden ontdekken hoe goed hij nog was."

"Om Nyck (de Vries) te zien worstelen, betekende dat het alleen maar relevanter was om een ervaren coureur naar AlphaTauri te halen. Het leek een logische keuze, en na zijn sterke optreden bij die test, was het de perfecte beslissing", meent Horner.

Max blijft zeker Red Bull trouw tot 2028, eerder gaat hij zeker niet stoppen, hij heeft alles te danken aan Red Bull.

Ik denk dat Red Bull na 2028 Max een contract zal geven dat hij ook in andere klasse kan rijden, als het schema dat toelaat, zo kunnen ze Max nog een aantal jaren langer houden.

Begin niet aan Daniel, mocht Max ooit stoppen (zeg 2028) moet je een Norris of Piastri hebben, voor de toekomst daarna.
Trouwens de naam Norris zei ik al 3 Jr geleden, ideaal voor de blikjes verkoop.

  Ik denk dat een pensioen (met het oog op de nieuwe stomme regels) in 2026 al mogelijk is. Om twee redenen:
  1. Max heeft zich zelf negatief uitgesproken over de regels in 2026.
  2. Ik voorzie ook in 2024 en 2025 twee makkelijke titels, waarna de motivatie om door te gaan misschien een stuk minder is geworden.
  
  En dan een paar jaar later een comeback omdat hij de sport mist zou geniaal zijn.
  Ik droom wat door, maar uiteraard moet je inderdaad al je pijlen richten op Norris en Piastri.

Ik hoop alleen dat Ricciardo het doorstromen van jong talent als Lawson niet in de weg gaat zitten. AT moet in mijn ogen een team blijven waar jonge coureurs van RB kunnen laten zien of ze het kunnen maken in de F1. Ik blijf er ook bij dat Lawson toen dat stoeltje had moeten krijgen en niet De Vries. Ik gun Ricciardo als hij laat zien dat hij het nog heeft een stoeltje in de F1. Ik zou liever zien dat hij Perez vervangt, dan dat hij neen RB junior de weg naar de F1 blokkeert.

Perkins stelt fans niet gerust: Hij gelooft Horner in dit geval totaal niet, als Perez blijft tegenvallen hopen ze met Ricciardo een alternatief voor 2024 in huis hebben...

  Dat weet ik wel zeker dat Horner maar wat l*lt. Checo heeft in het begin even wat mazzel gehad. De wisselvalligheid die we nu van hem zien zo was hij heel zijn carrière al. En dat zal RBR inmiddels ook wel doorhebben.
