Perez steunt Szafnauer: "Iedereen moet de tijd krijgen om zich te bewijzen"

Het team van Alpine nam na afloop van de Belgische Grand Prix afscheid van teambaas Otmar Szafnauer. Hij werd ontslagen vanwege een meningsverschil over de toekomst van de renstal. Niet iedereen was het eens met het ontslag van Szafnauer, hij ontvangt namelijk steun van Red Bull Racing-coureur Sergio Perez.

Het team van Alpine heeft een onrustige eerste seizoenshelft achter de rug. De Franse renstal kon niet meevechten om de prijzen en zat volledig vast in het middenveld. Esteban Ocon bezorgde het team het beste resultaat van het seizoen door in Monaco als derde over de streep te komen. Verder vallen de resultaten een beetje tegen, het enige andere lichtpuntje was de derde plek van Pierre Gasly in de Belgische Sprint.

Tijd

Het ontslag van Szafnauer kan dan ook op de nodige kritiek rekenen. Sergio Perez werkte bij Racing Point samen met Szafnauer en spreekt zich uit bij Motorsport.com: "Ik heb een enorme waardering voor Otmar en ik vind dat elke persoon in die positie de tijd moet krijgen om zich te bewijzen. Naar mijn mening kreeg Otmar niet genoeg tijd om zijn volledige potentieel te tonen, zijn potentieel is namelijk nogal indrukwekkend. Ik heb gezien wat hij heeft bereikt bij andere teams, zowel met ruime als met beperkte financiële middelen."

Opvolger

Perez is dan ook teleurgesteld in de keuze van het team van Alpine. De Mexicaanse Red Bull-coureur hoopt dat de Franse renstal in de toekomst iets geduldiger aan de slag gaat: "Het is teleurstellend dat ze Otmar hebben laten gaan. Aan de andere kant is het nu ook zeer belangrijk dat diegene die hem gaat opvolgen, ook de nodige tijd krijgt. Alle facetten van de Formule 1 kosten nou eenmaal heel erg veel tijd."

Nadat Sainz en Leclec een eind zagen komen aan hun jarenlange relatie met hun
vriendin en al snel weer een nieuwe vriendin hadden, is het nu de beurt aan Ocon.
Na een jarenlange relatie met Elena Berri (makelaar) die een aantal weken geleden
ineens afgelopen was is hij nu tijdens de vakantie in St Tropez met een nieuwe
vriendin gespot, Phoebe Torrance.
