Steiner prijst Hulkenberg om zijn leervermogen: 'Waren compleet verrast'

Dit seizoen is er een duidelijk verschil tussen beide coureurs voor het F1-team van Haas. Terwijl Kevin Magnussen tijdens de eerste seizoenshelft in vergelijking met zijn teamgenoot in het niet valt, heeft comeback-kid Nico Hulkenberg al vrijwel meteen na zijn terugkomst in de koningsklasse de snelheid weten te vinden. En dat is nou exact wat hem zo goed maakt, meent teambaas Guenther Steiner.

Een aantal seizoenen lang (3) stond Nico Hulkenberg met maar één voet binnen bij de deur van de Formule 1. Na een meerjarige periode bij Renault, bleek de Duitse coureur in 2020 niet langer over een contract als fulltime-coureur te beschikken. Hulkenberg hield zich tot aan het 2023-seizoen – het jaar van zijn terugkomst in de Formule 1 – echter wel druk bezig door in die drie jaren als reservecoureur en ontwikkelingscoureur voor Racing Point en Aston Martin werk te verrichten.

Sinds dit seizoen staat de inmiddels 36-jarige weer volop in de wereld van de Formule 1, en naast teamgenoot Kevin Magnussen weet Hulkenberg in positieve zin het meest van de twee op te vallen. Terwijl Magnussen veelal niet tijdens de kwalificatiesessies veelal in Q1 of Q2 eindigde, wist Hulkenberg meerdere malen het tot Q3 te schoppen. Volgens Haas-teambaas Guenther Steiner is dat te danken aan één van zijn beste kwaliteiten; namelijk het uitzonderlijk goede leervermogen.

"We waren compleet verrast hoe snel hij de boel weer op wist te pikken en in het team te integreren. Het was ongelofelijk hoe hij verschillende dingen vrijwel meteen door had. Daarentegen zit hij al een lange tijd in de sport, maar ook tijdens de races zette hij dit (goede leervermogen) voort. Hij pusht zichzelf tot het uiterste, terwijl hij tegelijkertijd niet over z'n grenzen gaat. Hij weet precies tot hoever hij moet gaan", laat Steiner aan Racingnews365 optekenen.

Hulk doet het supergoed, vooral in de kwalificaties. Alleen jammer dat ze bij Haas maar niet doorkrijgen om de bandenslijtage onder de knie te krijgen, en dat beessie daardoor de gekste bokkensprongen (achteruit) blijft maken tijdens de races.
