Steiner gebruikt opkomst McLaren als motivatie: "Dit verdient een complimentje"

Terwijl de koningsklasse aankomend weekend aan de tweede seizoenshelft gaat beginnen, wil Haas-baas Guenther Steiner een positief momentum pakken door de huidige bandenproblemen van zijn team op te lossen en een goede stap voor volgend seizoen te zetten. Als motivatie gebruikt de Noord-Italiaanse topman de recentelijke opkomst van McLaren, dat richting het einde van de eerste seizoenshelft flinke stappen voorwaarts wist te zetten.

Voor ruime tijd was Aston Martin hét opvallende team dat dit jaar een grote stap in performance had gevonden. Terwijl de groene Britse renstal vorig seizoen nog als zevende in het constructeursklassement afsloot, kon het tijdens de eerste F1-helft al zesmaal op het podium komen.

Maar niet alleen Aston Martin maakte grote stappen; vlak voor het begin van de zomerstop kwam er nóg een Britse renstal bij de subtop posities terecht: namelijk McLaren. De papajakleurige equipe sloeg de plank mis met haar eerste concept van de MCL60-bolide, maar wist later in 2023 met een geheel nieuw aerodynamisch plan te komen. Coureurs Lando Norris en Oscar Piastri waren sindsdien bij alle resterende Grands Prix in de top vijf te vinden, wat betekent dat er zachtjesaan gezegd kan worden dat het nieuwe aeroconcept van McLaren een groot succes is.

Het is dan ook niet geheel verrassend dat de andere negen teams de opkomst van McLaren niet zomaar kunnen negeren. Zo ook Guenther Steiner, teambaas van Haas, die laat weten veel motivatie uit McLaren's stijgende lijn van performance te halen:

"McLaren heeft een grote stap gemaakt en hebben uitstekend werk geleverd. Dat verdient een complimentje – het laat namelijk zien dat als je goed werk verricht en een klein beetje geluk aan je zijde hebt, je het voor elkaar kan krijgen. Je moet nooit opgeven en zeggen 'ik geef het op' - we kunnen zien dat zij het goed gedaan hebben, en daar kunnen wij kracht uithalen", meent Steiner.

Er staat 2x 'Steiner, teambaas van Haas' in het stukje, wat toch wel de vraag oproept: 'Waarom is Gene Haas nog steeds niet in staat om een fabrikant in de VS te vinden die wil bewijzen dat ze ook in Amerika in staat zijn een winnende F1 wagen te bouwen?'...
Want wat ze bij McLaren doen, hebben ze daar al eerder gedaan. Net als bij Williams en Renault en Honda, etc...
De Amerikanen lijken daar niet aan te willen.

  Onbegrijpelijk ook dat er nog geen sponsor van formaat (lees coca-cola of mc donalds) is aangetrokken voor het enige amerikaanse F1 team.
