Ricciardo zag Piastri te laat: "Moest kiezen tussen hem en de muur"

Daniel Ricciardo beleefde gisteren een zeer teleurstellende dag in Zandvoort. De Australische AlphaTauri-coureur crashte in de tweede vrije training en brak daarbij zijn middenhandsbeentje. Hij mist in ieder geval de rest van het huidige raceweekend en wordt vervangen door Liam Lawson. Ricciardo weet nog goed wat er precies mis ging.

Ricciardo crashte in de tweede vrije training op precies dezelfde plek waar Oscar Piastri enkele seconden eerder was gecrasht. Ricciardo knalde in de muur en kon zijn linkerhand niet op tijd van het stuur trekken. Toen hij uit zijn auto stapte was al duidelijk dat het geen goede zaak was. Hij ondersteunde zijn hand en werd direct naar het medisch centrum gebracht. Even later arriveerde hij in een ziekenhuis in Haarlem, daar bleek na scans dat hij zijn middenhandsbeentje had gebroken.

Ricciardo meldde zich na enkele uren met zijn hand in het gips weer in de paddock. De Australiër sprak zich daarna uit in een persbericht van AlphaTauri: "Ik weet nog hoe ik bocht drie in kwam. Ik kwam de bocht al in en zag toen pas Piastri staan. Ik moest kiezen: of hem raken of de muur raken. Toen ik de muur raakte, had ik te weinig tijd om mijn handen van het stuur af te trekken. Het is echt jammer en super frustrerend, maar ik ga mijn best doen om zo snel mogelijk te herstellen. Ik wil zou snel mogelijk terugkeren, maar ik wil ook dat alles goed gaat. Ik wil sterk en competitief terugkeren."

De gele waarschuwingslampen waren ruim op tijd, zoals te zien in de onbaordbeelden.
Hij reedt de brandende lampen voorbij in de Gerlachbocht en liet zich alsnog verrassen in de Hugenholtzbocht terwijl er plek genoeg was om er aan voorbij te rijden.
Daniel zat gewoon te slapen.

  Als ik de onboard bekijk haalt hij gewoon de bocht niet. Ik zie hem ook niet naar rechts sturen om Piastri te ontwijken.

  Ik dacht ook volgens mij heeft de hugenholtz nog een lage lijn waar Piastri niet stond.
  
  Nu moet ik wel zeggen dat ik geen onboard beelden heb gezien dus misschien dat de lamp op een rot hoek stond ter zijn verdediging.

OT. Heb gisteren een stukje van de repetitie van André Rieu gehoord
en was verbaasd hoe ontzettend mooi dat klonk.
Na afloop ving men hem bij het hotel op met het voltallige orkest voor een kort interview.
Wat een leuke, sympathieke man. Hij kreeg een mooie video boodschap van een
15 jarige zangeres met een waanzinnige stem! Kippenvel!!
