Lawson genoot van eerste kwalificatie: "Heel speciaal"

Liam Lawson kroop gisteren voor het eerst dit seizoen achter het stuur van een Formule 1-wagen tijdens een officiële sessie. De Nieuw-Zeelander werd vrijdagavond door AlphaTauri opgetrommeld als vervanger van de geblesseerde Daniel Ricciardo. Lawson debuteerde en genoot van zijn eerste meters als Formule 1-coureur.

Lawson kreeg het direct voor zijn kiezen, het regende immers bijna de hele dag. De Nieuw-Zeelander kwam in de derde vrije training direct de baan op en draaide dapper zijn rondjes. In de laatste minuten spinde hij in de laatste bocht waardoor er met de rode vlag werd gezwaaid. Hij kon gewoon zijn weg vervolgen en had zich dus zo goed mogelijk voorbereid op de kwalificatie. Hij sloot de kwalificatie af als langzaamste coureur, maar voor hem was het meer een extra test.

Vandaag zal Lawson voor het eerst aan de start verschijnen van een Grand Prix. De Nieuw-Zeelander kan zeker nog racen, hij is immers actief in de Japanse Super Formula. In gesprek met Viaplay keek hij terug op zijn eerste kwalificatie: "Het was heel speciaal, maar ik moest over veel dingen nadenken. Ik dacht dus niet echt aan het resultaat. Door de omstandigheden was het best lastig, maar ik heb genoten. Toen het droog was, voelde ik mij vrij goed. Daarna ging het weer regenen. Ik had verwacht dat de grip zou afnemen, maar dat was niet zo."
