Verstappen blij met contractverlenging Hamilton: "Goed voor de sport"

Gisteren werd bekend dat Lewis Hamilton zijn contract bij het team van Mercedes heeft verlengd. De Britse zevenvoudig staat nu tot en met 2025 onder contract bij de Duitse renstal. Veel coureurs reageerden positief op het nieuws, ook Max Verstappen feliciteert zijn voormalig titelrivaal.

Na maanden vol met speculatie over de toekomst van Hamilton, heeft Mercedes nu eindelijk duidelijkheid gegeven. Gistermiddag werd bekend dat Hamilton en George Russell allebei hun contract hebben verlengd tot en met 2025. Hamilton beschikte over een aflopend contract en er was veel onduidelijkheid over zijn toekomst. Hij werd in verband gebracht met het team van Ferrari, maar hij blijft het team van Mercedes trouw.

Veel coureurs reageerden positief op de contractverlenging van Hamilton. De Brit heeft veel voor de sport betekend en is nog steeds razend populair. Hamilton vocht in 2021 een intens titelduel uit met Max Verstappen. Alhoewel de duels fel waren, reageert Verstappen in Monza wel zeer positief op het nieuws: "Dit is goed nieuws voor de sport. Uiteindelijk is het ook goed voor hemzelf en ook voor Mercedes, want ze vormen al zo enorm lang een team. Dat ze die samenwerking gaan voortzetten, is natuurlijk heel erg mooi voor hen en voor de sport."

      Klopt, Pietje, dat doet hij altijd. Maar af en toe krijg ik toch wel eens heimwee naar de tijd dat hij zich in een mindere auto omhoog moest werken, op de baan met zijn ellebogen en verbaal met pittige uitspraken. : Dat krijg je als je de boel belazerd" bv . Was ook een feitelijk gemeende maar pittige uitspraak. Tegenwoordig gaat alles zo makkelijk en zijn ze zo lief voor elkaar!

    Max: "Daarvoor moeten we natuurlijk eerst maar zien wat er bij de verschillende teams gebeurt en hoe iedereen volgend jaar presteert."

    Buiten de baan heb ik persoonlijk niet veel met Hamilton, maar op de baan kan ik wel van hem genieten. En vergeet ook niet dat de man inmiddels al 38 jaar oud is. Hij is uiteraard allang voorbij z'n top, maar laat nog steeds mooie dingen zien. Is het nog echt een bedreiging voor Max? Nee dat denk ik niet. Is dat erg? Nee ook niet.

      @d07 op een goede dag kan Hamilton nog wel winnen. Als het bij Max niet gladjes verloopt. Over een heel seizoen waarschijnlijk niet.

    Hamilton kan nu 2 jaar langer cashen voordat hij een rol als Mercedes ambassadeur aan neemt. Ik vind het wel raar. Er lopen zoveel talenten rond die je voor een habbekrats in de auto kan zetten. Daarmee investeer je meteen in de toekomst. Maak Russel kopman en zet een aanstormend talent in de auto. McLaren heeft het wel begrepen door Norris en Piastri voor hun renstal te laten debuteren.

      Je onderschat wellicht zijn naam en status. Net als met Kimi destijds. Dat levert ook nog teveel geld in t laadje om een jong talent erin te zetten. Er zal ene tijd komen dat Lewis stopt. Daarna is ie een coureur v vroeger. Iemand met zo'n naam en status en cv wil men zolang mogelijk rijdend houden. Nog steeds commercieel v onschatbare waarde.

    Max is daar gewoon eerlijk in en hij meent dat ook. Met in zijn achterhoofd wetende dat Mercedes de komende 2 seizoenen de RBR niet kunnen verslaan.
