Wolff denkt niet meer aan Singapore: "Hopen op een competitieve race"

Het team van Mercedes speelde afgelopen weekend een hoofdrol in de Grand Prix van Singapore. De Duitse renstal koos voor een dappere strategie, maar door de crash van George Russell eindigde de race deels in tranen. Toto Wolff wil aankomend weekend weer gaan toeslaan in Japan.

De Singaporese Grand Prix was afgelopen weekend een spannend spektakelstuk. De Mercedessen van George Russell en Lewis Hamilton stopten tijdens de Virtual Safety Car-fase voor verse setjes mediums. Ze openden toen de aanval op Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris en raceleider Carlos Sainz. Leclerc werd simpel ingehaald, maar daarna bleken Norris en Sainz een brug te ver te zijn. Russell maakte in de slotronde een foutje waardoor hij crashte.

Japan

Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff leeft mee met Russell. De Oostenrijker kijkt nu niet meer terug, hij zet zijn zinnen nu op de Japanse Grand Prix. In de vooruitblik van Mercedes spreekt Wolff zich uit: "We hebben over een paar dagen weer een race. De wedstrijd in Japan is altijd een uniek evenement met passionele fans. De baan is enorm uitdagend en de coureurs genieten ervan. De verschillen in Singapore waren enorm klein, dus we hopen ook op een competitieve race in Suzuka."

Ferrari

Wolff houdt vooral rekening met het team van Ferrari in Japan. De teambaas ziet de Italiaanse renstal als de belangrijkste tegenstander. Wolff doet daar niet zo moeilijk over: "In de laatste race hebben we wat terrein verloren ten opzichte van Ferrari in het constructeurskampioenschap. We kijken nu vooruit, we kijken niet meer terug. Onze focus ligt op het maximaliseren van ons pakket, we willen zoveel mogelijk punten scoren."

Als het komend weekend Red Bull er weer staat, dan heeft Mercedes die ene kans op een overwinning gemist. Daar zullen ze stevig van balen.
