Wolff baalt van sprints: "Onze auto is een diva"

Aankomend weekend gaat het Formule 1-seizoen weer verder met de Grand Prix van Qatar. Op het circuit van Losail wordt er ook weer een Sprint afgewerkt. Bij Mercedes heeft men daar eigenlijk geen zin in. Teambaas Toto Wolff geeft aan dat ze meer sessies nodig hebben om de auto onder controle te krijgen.

Mercedes is bezig met een wisselvallig seizoen in de koningsklasse van de autosport. Het ene weekend is alles koek en ei, maar een race later worstelen Lewis Hamilton en George Russell met de auto. Het is duidelijk dat men hard moet werken om de auto werkende te krijgen en dat zorgt vaak voor ergernis. Een sprintweekend komt dan meestal niet als geroepen, al helemaal als het gaat om een circuit dat de coureurs niet zo goed kennen.

Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff geeft aan dat zijn team niet kan profiteren van de sprintraces. De Oostenrijker verwacht niet zoveel van het weekend op het circuit van Losail. In gesprek met RaceFans legt Wolff de problemen uit: "De auto is enorm gevoelig en we hebben meer sessies nodig om onze set-up onder controle te krijgen. Onze coureurs weten niet altijd wat de auto gaat doen als ze een bocht maken. Het draait er altijd om, om vertrouwen te tanken tijdens die sessies. Hoe langer we rijden, hoe beter we de auto begrijpen. Sprints zijn dus niet goed voor ons omdat de auto zo'n diva is."

Het verhaal gaat dat Toto de laatste weken enkel maar boodschappen bij de Jumbo heeft gedaan in een poging om zijn Jumbo spaarkaart vol te krijgen met Verstappen zegeltjes en hiermee een exemplaar van de RB19 modelauto un zijn bezit te krijgen zodat hij de vloerplaat kan bestuderen.
