Ricciardo achteraf blij met McLaren-ontslag

Daniel Ricciardo keerde dit seizoen redelijk onverwachts terug in de Formule 1. De Australiër werd eind vorig jaar weggestuurd bij McLaren en hij tekende dit jaar een contract als derde coureur bij Red Bull Racing. Hij mocht daarna invallen bij AlphaTauri en hij kreeg ook een contract voor 2024 bij dat team. Achteraf gezien is hij blij met zijn McLaren-ontslag.

Ricciardo werd vorig seizoen veelvuldig verslagen door zijn toenmalige teamgenoot Lando Norris. De Australiër verkeerde in een mindere periode van zijn loopbaan en zijn resultaten vielen heel erg tegen. McLaren besloot dan ook om zijn contract te ontbinden aan het einde van 2022. Ricciardo vertrok naar zijn oude liefde Red Bull en daar kreeg hij eerder dit jaar een kans bij AlphaTauri. Hij raakte geblesseerd, maar hij kreeg toch een contract voor 2024.

Pittig

Achteraf gezien was zijn ontslag misschien wel goed voor zijn loopbaan. Ricciardo heeft deze mening zelf nu ook, zo laat de Australiër weten op de website van Goodwood: "Destijds was het wel pittig om ontslagen te worden. Toen ik thuis kwam met kerst dacht ik dat dit niet zo goed zou zijn voor mijn reputatie. Op dat moment kon het mij echter niet zoveel schelen. Ik moest even een stapje terug doen en mijzelf weer opladen om mijn liefde voor de sport weer terug te vinden."

In de put

Ricciardo is nu weer dol op de Formule 1 en dat steekt hij niet onder stoelen of banken. Hij is dan ook van mening dat zijn vertrek bij McLaren heel goed is geweest voor zijn huidige ontwikkeling en zijn persoonlijke proces: "Ik denk ook dat het mij niet goed zou hebben gedaan als ik mijn McLaren-contract had uitgediend. Op een bepaalde manier ben ik dankbaar voor de beslissing, want we zaten in de put. Ik weet niet zeker of we er uit hadden kunnen komen."

      Het vergelijk met de goedkope Carlos is "mindblowing" hoewel zijn nieuw contract nu wel een ander cijfertje (en voorwaarden) zal hebben. Alle partijen blij is win win win zeker . . . enkel van RB ben ik er nog niet uit . . .

      Als je klein beetje research had gedaan, dan moet je die uitgebluste..... juist bedanken... Hij heeft MCL juist geld bespaard, en niet alleen op salaris.
      Als hij zn contract had uitgezeten, dan was MCL meer kwijt geweest, namelijk 16 miljoen.

      Hij is uitgekocht voor 10 miljoen, dus MCL bespaart 6 miljoen.
      Piastri kost geen 6 miljoen per jaar...
      en dan hebben we de evt schade er niet in meegenomen.

      Als je wilt dat ik het voor je uitreken, laat maar weten. ;)

    Ik kan me voorstellen dat hij achteraf blij is omdat het simpelweg niet werkte. Als hij langer was gebleven dan had Norris hem alleen maar verder aan gort gereden en hem meer reputatieschade opgeleverd. Toen hij naar McLaren ging zag men Ric als een van de beste rijders. Dat lijkt nu niet het geval.

      Juist dat en daarom begrijp ik hem niet dat hij naast Max wilt komen te zitten. Ik geloof echt niet dat het zo’n pannenkoek is als de meeste hier beweren maar wel dat het een coureur is die de juiste omstandigheden nodig heeft om te presteren.
      En je weet een ding zeker met Max als teamgenoot……….dat je kan fluiten naar de juiste omstandigheden

      Ric is denk ik in een fase dat het hem niet uitmaakt onder welke omstandigheden hij terecht zal komen zolang hij maar in die Red Bull komt te rijden.

    RIC kan dit allemaal wel roepen, maar zo langzaamaan is hij toch wel een coureur met één van de meest rommelige F1 carrières in de hele sport.

    Hij heeft het zo vaak over zijn verkeerde keuzes waar hij geen spijt van heeft, dat het meer geloofwaardig is dat hij dat wel heeft. Heel veel zelfs! En ik verwacht hem niet meer op zijn oude niveau terug te zien...
