Leclerc wil Ferrari niet verlaten: "Doe ik pas als ik er niet meer in geloof"

Charles Leclerc is al een groot gedeelte van zijn loopbaan verbonden aan het team van Ferrari. De Monegask heeft het niet altijd even makkelijk bij Ferrari, maar het team zit diep in zijn hart. Leclerc geeft aan dat hij Ferrari pas gaat verlaten als hij niet meer in het project gelooft.

Leclerc werd al na één seizoen in de Formule 1 gepromoveerd naar het topteam van Ferrari. Sindsdien geldt hij als één de beste coureurs van het startveld. Leclerc heeft het echter vaak zwaar gehad, mede omdat Ferrari niet altijd een sterke auto had gebouwd. Ook dit seizoen is de Ferrari niet altijd even snel, zijn teamgenoot Carlos Sainz presteert echter iets beter. De Spanjaard wist namelijk de Singaporese Grand Prix te winnen.

Geen geloof

Leclerc denkt er voorlopig niet aan om het team van Ferrari te gaan verlaten. De Monegask beschikt over een aflopend contract, maar hij wil deze zo snel mogelijk verlengen. In gesprek met The Race laat hij weten wanneer hij Ferrari wel zou verlaten: "Zodra ik niet meer in dit project geloof, dan is het waarschijnlijk tijd om weg te gaan. In dat soort situaties waar je niet meer het beste uit jezelf kan halen, dan kan je het team niet meer helpen."

Geloof

Voorlopig heeft wil de Monegaskische coureur het team nog niet gaan verlaten. Hij voelt zich goed en hij is heel erg blij met Ferrari's huidige teambaas Frédéric Vasseur: "Momenteel is het niet zo dat ik mij hier slecht voel. Ik geloof meer in dit project dan ooit te voren. Dat gevoel heb ik vooral sinds Fred hier is gearriveerd. Nu is het dus wel duidelijk. Het is ook wel duidelijk dat ik wil winnen. Ik geloof in dit project en ik denk dat we de juiste richting op gaan."

    Te pas en te onpas wordt tegenwoordig iets een "project" genoemd.
    Wat bedoeld Charles ?......de renstal Ferrari, of Vasseur, of zijn eigen contract ? Zal aan mij liggen maar een "project" zie ik ff niet.

    Lovenswaardige instelling,... maar waar 'in geloof' precies ?
    Hij zit op dit moment toch echt bij het verkeerde team om wereldkampioen te worden, en was dat niet zijn ambitie toen hij tekende?

      Zo bezien zitten er wel meer getalenteerde jonge gasten bij zgn het 'verkeerde team'.
      Russell die het stoeltje van Bottas overnam uitgerekend toen MB was weggezakt in de rangorde. Norris zit bij een team wat structureel slagkracht tekort komt om nog serieus een gooi naar kampioenschappen te doen.
      Allemaal jongens die het wél in zich hebben.
      Sainz en Leclerc zitten in ieder geval nog bij een team wat meeste seizoenen goed is voor nog wat podiums en hier en daar een verdwaalde overwinning.

    Vind het mooi om te zien hoe hij geloof heeft in Ferrari. Ik hoop voor hem dat ze in 2024 dan een auto kunnen leveren die structureel mee kan doen voor overwinningen en pole’s. Als dat zo is dan zie ik Leclerc nog wel WK worden.

    Zo niet dan zie ik het gebeuren dat 2025 toch wel zijn laatste jaar wordt daar.

    Charles Leclerc. Een megatalent. Maar kan de boeken ingaan als iemand die steeds weer de kaas van z'n brood liet eten. Te lief. Te goed van vertrouwen. Te voorspelbaar. Ik zou dat zo jammer vinden maar tegelijkertijd maakt dat hem ook wel sympathiek. Ik geloof zelfs dat hij in de basis net zo getalenteerd is dan Max Verstappen of zelfs meer. Dat beweren mensen die met hem en Max hebben gewerkt. Maar om te winnen heb je daarnaast ook andere kwaliteiten nodig en die ontbreken (nog). En of Fred Vasseur dan de persoon is om hem dat te leren? Ik betwijfel dat.

      Hij is eigenlijk altijd verslagen door Verstappen. Leclerc is duidelijk nog niet opgewassen tegen Verstappen in gelijke auto's. Hooguit individuele races. Dat geldt ook voor Leclerc versus Hamilton. Leclerc is een one trick pony in de huidige F1. Kan hard over 1 rondje. En dat is het enige waar hij zich met de besten kan meten. In wiel aan wiel is hij niet goed genoeg. Voor de banden is hij niet op het niveau van de besten. In de regen valt hij vooral negatief op. Onder druk maakt hij veel te veel fouten. Er zit ook helemaal geen groei in zijn vaardigheden.
      Doet me pijn om te zeggen. Ben best fan van hem. Maar hij is absoluut de mindere van Verstappen en de goede Hamilton.
      Hij wordt alleen kampioen als hij de absoluut beste auto heeft en hij een goed jaar doormaakt.

      Max heeft Marko en Horner achter zich staan, Albon gaat lekker met Vowles, Nando met Krack, Lewis heeft Wolff, Norris Stella. Charles is hopeloos op zoek naar dezelfde erkenning binnen Ferrari. Is Vasseur dan die persoon?

      Vasseur weet ik niet. Maar Elkann heeft al lang zijn liefde verklaard aan Verstappen.
      Elkann trekt achter de schermen aan de touwtjes.

      Die nieuwe motoren gaan inderdaad de grid door elkaar schudden. Ieder kan dan bovenaan komen. Er zal waarschijnlijk 1 motor dominant worden en welke dat is en met hoeveel verschil valt niet te voorspellen.

      Dat weet Charles ook wel. Maar kennelijk verandert dat niets aan zijn doel. Sterker nog, ik heb het idee dat hij er alleen maar hardnekkiger van wordt. Hij wil wereldkampioen worden en wel in een Ferrari. En hij heeft schijnbaar geduld.
