Ook Verstappen steunt Andretti: "Ik snap dat de teams het niet willen"

Autosportfederatie FIA maakte eerder deze week bekend dat ze de plannen van Andretti goed hebben gekeurd. De Amerikaanse renstal gaan nu in gesprek met de FOM dus toetreding tot de Formule 1 is nog lang niet zeker. Max Verstappen laat weten dat hij in ieder geval een voorstander is van de komst van Andretti.

Het hing al eventjes in de lucht dat de plannen van Andretti goed zouden worden gekeurd. De Amerikaanse racefamilie had de handen ineen geslagen met General Motors-merk Cadillac en ze jagen al jaren op een plekje op de grid. De FIA zit hun komst wel zitten, maar de huidige teams zijn geen fan. Ze vrezen dat dit hun geld gaat kosten en ze zitten vanzelfsprekend niet te wachten op een nieuwe uitdager.

Lastig

De coureurs staan er echter iets anders in. Lewis Hamilton liet in Qatar al weten dat hij fan is van de plannen en ook Max Verstappen ziet het wel zitten. Op het circuit van Losail sprak hij zich hierover uit in gesprek met de internationale media: "Het is best lastig om antwoord te geven op die vraag omdat ik spreek van het oogpunt van een coureur. Ik ben natuurlijk geen teambaas en ik kan hun standpunt ook wel begrijpen."

Kansen

Verstappen heeft het nieuws omtrent de plannen van Andretti en de samenwerking met Cadillac ook gevolgd. De Nederlander deelt dan ook zijn eigen standpunt over de zaak: "Alles wat ik toe nu toe heb gezien laat zien dat ze een professioneel team zijn, dat geldt ook voor hun aanstaande partners. Het zou leuk zijn omdat het meer kansen biedt vanuit het oogpunt van de coureurs. Ik kan echter wel begrijpen dat de teams er niet op zitten te wachten."

Het lijkt me volstrekt duidelijk dat meer auto's op de baan de show ten goede komt.
Waar bemoeien die teams zich eigenlijk mee? Als meer concurrentie hen niet bevalt, daar is het gat van de deur.
Ik hoef er vast ook niet op te wijzen dat F1 van oudsher vele seizoenen heeft gekend met een startg... [Lees verder]

  Dan komt Hamilton naast verstappen te zitten. Ditto Alonso. Die had het over een goede vriend ivm Andretti. Ook Gasly, Perez, Albon en Zhou wilden lievr zwijgen dan tegen het team in te gaan.

Het lijkt me volstrekt duidelijk dat meer auto's op de baan de show ten goede komt.
Waar bemoeien die teams zich eigenlijk mee? Als meer concurrentie hen niet bevalt, daar is het gat van de deur.
Ik hoef er vast ook niet op te wijzen dat F1 van oudsher vele seizoenen heeft gekend met een startgrid van 24, soms zelfs 26 auto's. Voorts kun je ook met een schuin oog kijken naar concurrerende klassen - die dus ook een veel groter startveld hebben.
Kortom, het is eigenlijk een schande dat er alweer een jaar 10 zo'n armoedig startveld wordt voorgeschoteld. En dat zulke belachelijke drempels worden opgeworpen om dat in stand te houden.
Ik vind ook niet dat we als kijker ons in het standpunt van teambazen moeten verplaatsen. Reken maar dat zij het omgekeerde zeker niet doen.

  Er is nog een periode geweest dat er nog meer waren 26 auto's. Dan hielden ze kwalificaties voor te bepalen wie aan de echte kwalificaties mocht deelnemen.

  Van de andere kant, als een team nu omvalt en stopt, hebben ze er nog maar 9, dat is absoluut te weinig. En een 11e team erbij met fabrieks ondersteuning. zou heel fijn zijn.

  Dat zegt FOM al langer, maar nu FIA een team de goedkeuring heeft gegeven , veranderd FOM van menig.
  Alleen hadden ze nooit verwacht dat FIA echt zou doorzetten.
  Of er een 11de team komt is voorlopig minder belangrijk geworden, het politieke antwoord van FOM is dat niet meer.

De FIA heeft het slim gespeeld.. Aanvraag (publiekelijk) goedgekeurd en de bal vervolgens neerleggen bij de FOM, die nu voor een dillema staan.. Laten ze Andretti toe dan moeten ze de prijzenpot door 11 delen i.p.v. 10, doen ze het niet dan krijgen ze een hoop negatief PR gezeik over zich heen dat de F1 erg conservatief en isolerend bezig is, het alleen maar om geld draait en er niet geluisterd wordt naar de fans etc die wel meer auto's op de baan willen zien..
