Horner ziet Verstappen schitteren: "Hij kijkt niet naar de ranglijst"

Max Verstappen is zijn mogelijke kampioensweekend met een hoogtepunt begonnen. De Nederlander noteerde de snelste tijd en hij mag de Grand Prix aankomende zondag vanaf de pole position starten. Zijn teambaas Christian Horner was heel blij met het resultaat, maar hij moest wel even zijn adem inhouden.

Verstappen noteerde in zijn eerste run in het belangrijke derde kwalificatiegedeelte direct de snelste tijd. Zijn concullega's konden daar niet bij in de buurt komen. In zijn tweede run wilde hij zijn tijd verbeteren, maar hij ging wijd en schoot daardoor van de baan. Hierop besloot Red Bull hem naar binnen te halen waardoor hij vanuit de pitlane kon zien hoe zijn concurrenten niet in de buurt konden komen van zijn tijd.

Banker lap

Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner was enorm tevreden met het resultaat van zijn stercoureur. De Brit sprak zich na afloop uit bij Sky Sports: "Gelukkig noteerde hij in zijn eerste run echt een megarondje. Hij kreeg alles daar voor elkaar. In de eerste sector deelde hij de hardste klappen uit. Ik denk dat hij daarna probeerde om er meer uit te krijgen, maar in dat rondje maakte hij een foutje. Gelukkig was zijn banker lap van daarvoor goed genoeg."

Wereldtitel

Verstappen kan zich nu volledig focussen op zijn mogelijke wereldtitel. Morgen in de Sprint is het waarschijnlijk al zover. Dat zou dus betekenen dat de race een soort lange ereronde gaat worden. Volgens Horner denkt Verstappen niet zo: "Hij kijkt niet eens naar de ranglijst. Hij valt elke sprint en Grand Prix aan met dezelfde intensiteit. Hij is een echte racer, hij wil altijd winnen en hij zal er vol voor gaan."

Als ze die jongen proberen af te remmen, dan verliest 'ie zijn motivatie. Dat weet Marko ook.
Gewoon in de auto stappen en dan bewijzen dat je de snelste bent.

Er liggen ook nog wat records die hij kan oprapen. Meeste overwinningen, grootste percentage overwinningen, meeste punten, enz enz. Ben niet zo van de statistieken, maar het kan zo wel een heel bijzonder seizoen worden in de geschiedenis van de F1.
