Verstappen schrijft geschiedenis met derde wereldtitel

Het is hem gelukt: Max Verstappen is nu officieel een drievoudig wereldkampioen in de Formule 1. De titel die iedereen al zag aankomen is een feit. Verstappen zet hiermee een kroon op een absurd sterk seizoen in de koningsklasse van de autosport. Iedereen verwachtte wel een goede Verstappen, maar dat hij zó sterk zou presteren zag niemand aankomen.

Verstappen was eind vorig jaar al bezig met een sterke reeks en ook dit jaar is hij in vorm. Voorafgaand het seizoen hoopten zijn concurrenten dat ze de degens konden kruisen met hem. Uiteindelijk bleek dat niemand in de buurt kon komen van Verstappen, hij voerde het begrip ‘lonely at the top’ met gemak uit. Terwijl Verstappen rustig achterover leunt op de bergtop, bevinden zijn concurrenten zich nog onder de boomgrens.

Alleen Sergio Perez probeerde een serieuze aanval in te zetten, maar na een paar raceweekenden kon hij de witte vlag al hijsen. Perez versloeg zijn Red Bull-teamgenoot in Saoedi-Arabië en Azerbeidzjan, maar daarna ging het steeds slechter met de Mexicaan. Terwijl hij crashte, blunderde en worstelde, ging het steeds beter met Verstappen. Hij greep de macht en liet deze niet meer los. Vanaf de Grand Prix van Miami tot en met de race op Monza was hij onverslaanbaar.

Planeet

In deze maanden legde hij het fundament voor zijn derde wereldtitel. Zijn concurrenten zagen hem alleen maar bij de start en vaak was na de eerste bocht al duidelijk dat Verstappen had gewonnen. Volgens zijn critici maakte Verstappen de sport saai, maar wie verder kijkt ziet dat hij simpelweg geschiedenis schreef. Record na record sneuvelde en de wereld is getuigen van een ongekende zegereeks. Verstappen is waarschijnlijk op dit moment de sterkst presterende sporter van de planeet.

Hij wil zelf echter niet worden vergeleken met sporters in andere disciplines, dus daarom is beter om te kijken in welke rijtjes in de Formule 1-geschiedenis Verstappen nu terechtkomt. Alleen Michael Schumacher, Juan Manuel Fangio, Sebastian Vettel en Lewis Hamilton wisten drie of meer wereldtitels op rij te winnen. Dat is geen slecht rijtje namen en dat zal Verstappen zich ook beseffen.

Legendes

Verstappen heeft nu drie wereldtitels en daarmee komt hij op gelijke hoogte met Jack Brabham, Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda, Nelson Piquet en Ayrton Senna. Verstappen kan volgend seizoen gaan jagen op zijn vierde wereldtitel, als dat hem lukt, dan evenaart hij Alain Prost en Sebastian Vettel. Dat is echter de toekomst en vandaag de dag telt alleen het heden. En in het heden heeft Verstappen zojuist geschiedenis geschreven met zijn derde wereldtitel. 2023 is nog niet voorbij, maar Verstappen is al wel de wereldkampioen. Wie weet wat hij dit jaar nog meer kan presteren.

nog iemand de straat opgerend toen Perez uitviel? Ik was zelf vooral met de race bezig, had nog op een mooi duel met Piastri gehoopt maar dat zat er helaas niet meer in.
