Verstappen kritisch: "Alsof je in een sauna rondloopt"

Na afloop van de Qatarese Grand Prix concludeerden veel coureurs dat de omstandigheden in de race veel te zwaar waren. De hitte zorgde voor fysieke problemen bij veel coureurs. Max Verstappen omschreef de situatie als 'niet goed' en hij vergeleek de omstandigheden met een sauna.

Het was al het hele weekend bloedheet in Qatar. De temperatuur op het circuit van Losail tikte met gemak de veertig graden Celsius aan. Veel coureurs hadden het lastig en het medische team had het druk. Logan Sargeant viel al tijdens de race uit met uitdrogingsverschijnselen en zijn Williams-teamgenoot Alexander Albon kon ook met moeite zijn auto uitkomen. Ook Lance Stroll ging bijna out bij het verlaten van zijn auto en Esteban Ocon gaf zelfs over tijdens de race.

Fitheid

Racewinnaar Max Verstappen was na afloop zeer kritisch op de organisatie van de Grand Prix. De kersvers drievoudig wereldkampioen omschreef de omstandigheden als 'niet goed' in gesprek met Motorsport.com: "Toen ik de weersverwachting bekeek voordat ik hierheen kwam, keek ik er al niet naar uit om hier te rijden. Het is gewoon te warm, dit heeft niets meer te maken met trainen. Ik denk dat een paar van de coureurs die het vandaag moeilijk hadden, extreem fit zijn. Ze zijn misschien zelfs fitter dan ik."

Sauna

Verstappen vond het in Singapore ook al warm, maar de race op het circuit van Losail in Qatar was volgens hem nog zwaarder. Hij vond het bijna onverantwoord en hij legde uit hoe het aanvoelde voor de coureurs: "Het is de hele dag alsof je in een sauna rondloopt en in de avond gaat de luchtvochtigheid ook nog eens omhoog. Wij moeten daar vervolgens ook nog eens een vrij lange Grand Prix in gaan rijden."

    Zoals ik onder een eerder draadje al schreef, wat heeft de F1 te zoeken daar in die zandbak? Moeten er eerst doden vallen?

      Waarom toch altijd die hooghartige term zandbak gebruiken? Het is gewoon een onderdeel van de wereld enhet is een wk. bahrain, ab en qatar zijn misschien veel races in dezelde regio maar je kan er prima racen en er moet ook geraced worden.

      Als de FIA een beetje heeft zitten opletten kijken ze om deze race volgend jaar op een andere datum te zetten.

      Zijn er zat die 5 ploegendiensten werken in nog wel wat warmere en *kuch* zwaardere beroepen... belachelijk he... alleen krijgen die geen miljoenen.

      @Joeppp: als Liberty had bedacht om een race op de Noordpool te rijden dan had ik ‘sneeuwbak’ geschreven. En ook daar wonen mensen met gevoel en trots op hun woonplaats. Je hebt gelijk dat ‘zandbak’ wat neerbuigend klinkt, maar het is door mij niet bedoeld om een bevolkingsgroep een stempel te geven. Het zand van Quatar sloopt de onderdelen van de auto’s en maakt de baan soms spekglad. De hitte en de zon maken dat mensen, machines, banden en asfalt (bijna) smelt en het daar levensgevaarlijk maakt. En als er nu grote groepen met fans wonen of minimaal 1 of 2 aansprekende coureurs vandaan komen, dan kan ik het me nog voorstellen, maar ook dat lijkt me niet het geval. Het lijkt een op een 4-dagen lange TV-commercial voor Qatar om aan de wereld te laten zien wat ze hebben en kunnen en dat doen ze door de F1 zoveel geld te betalen dat ze het niet kunnen weigeren om daar naartoe te komen.

      Naar mijn mening moeten we óf op een ander, koeler moment daar gaan racen, of deze race simpelweg van de kalender halen. Dadelijk vallen er nog doden.

      Ik had nog een ideeetje. Kan er niet een maximum temperatuur ingesteld worden waaronder er geracet mag worden? Als het er boven is, dan wordt de race uit veiligheid geschrapt of fors ingekort?

    Zandbak en tropische races verplaatsen naar de meest geschikte periode van het jaar. Of airco verplichten in elke auto, hetzelfde model.

    Gisteren was ik nog kritisch over sargeant, dat hij niet fit genoeg zou zijn, maar nu ik candaag gelezen heb dat er meerdere coureurs bijna zijn flauwgevallen, of kotsend in de wagen hebben gezeten, moet ik mijn mening herzien.

    Dit zijn geen omstandigheden om in te sporten.

      Het schijnt dat Sargeant niet drinkt tijdens de race. In deze omstandigheden is dat vragen om problemen.

      Hoeft ook niet verfrissend te zijn nr 76, als het maar hydraterend is.

      Voor mij gewoon een veiligheidsissue; als je ziet hoeveel coureurs last hadden van de hitte dan vraag je je af hoe zij zouden hebben gereageerd op onverwachte gebeurtenissen. Gewoonweg gevaarlijk.

      Je kunt beter drinkwater van 50 graden tot je nemen, dan niets.
      Het gaat erom dat je lichaam hydrateert.
