Na vijf wedstrijden is Daniel Ricciardio weer terug bij Scuderia AlphaTauri. De 34-jarige coureur kampte met een handblessure en moest een periode noodgedwongen aan de zijlijn toekijken. De achtvoudig Grand Prix-winnaar kan niet wachten om weer achter het stuur te kruipen van de AT004. ''Ik ben blij weer terug te zijn'', begon de goedlachse Australiër. ''Met mijn hand gaat het goed. Ik wil gewoon weer beginnen'', zei hij bij de persconferentie.

Tijdens de tweede vrije training in Zandvoort liep Ricciardo zijn blesssure op. In de Hugenholtzbocht zag hij de stilstaande Esteban Ocon te laat en ramde zijn AlphaTauri in de muur om een crash met de Fransman te voorkomen. In eerste instantie leek het mee te vallen, maar na verder onderzoek was er meer aan de hand. Voor Ricciardo een bittere pil. ''Het was misschien moeilijker dan ik dacht, ook met de blessure. Na de crash hadden we wel verwacht dat er iets gebroken was dat snel te herstellen was. Maar na de operatie in Barcelona en meerdere checks zag de breuk er veel slechter uit. Dat zorgde ervoor dat de genezing langer duurde en de situatie wat moeilijker werd voor mijzelf.''

Sinds de Nederlandse Grand Prix had Liam Lawson het stokje overgenomen in een wagen die steeds beter werd. ''Toen ik in Singapore was, had een team een positief weekend na wat flinke updates", vervolgde Ricciardo. "Dat zag er goed uit. De rijders zeiden dat ze duidelijk verschil voelden. Ik verwacht een auto die sterker is dan toen ik er voor het laatst uitstapte. Maar het wordt pas in 2023 de derde race die ik ga doen. Ik wil dat niet als excuus gebruiken, maar alles voelt nog als nieuw voor mij.''

Zijn vervanger scoorde twee punten na de Grand Prix in Singapore. Ricciardo was onder de indruk van zijn invalbeurten: ''Lawson heeft het erg goed gedaan", sloot hij af.

Ik hoop dat hij zijn skills weer terug heeft, zie hem -liefst meteen na Mexico- veel liever in de RB dan W.E. Perez...

  Het niveau van Tsunoda had Lawson al direct te pakken, dus een ervaren man als Ricciardo moet daar direct onderdoor, anders heeft hem parkeren bij RBR volgend jaar geen zin
