Leclerc juicht na pole: "Ik maakte een paar foutjes"

De kwalificatie op het Circuit of the Americas was zeer close. De coureurs van McLaren, Red Bull Racing, Ferrari en Mercedes waren aan elkaar gewaagd. Aangezien Max Verstappen over de track limits was gegaan, ging de pole position naar Charles Leclerc. De Monegask was daar zeer tevreden mee.

Ferrari maakte op de vrijdag in Austin een zeer stabiele indruk. Ze hebben nog geen steek laten vallen en ze zagen dat niet alles naar wens ging bij concurrent Red Bull Racing. In de kwalificatie werd het publiek getrakteerd op een ouderwets secondespel waarbij het balletje de kant van Verstappen leek op te rollen. Niets bleek echter minder waar, want hij was over de track limits gegaan. De pole werd hierdoor een prooi voor Leclerc.

Foutloos

Leclerc streed de gehele kwalificatie mee om de beste tijden. De Monegask zag dat zijn concurrenten over de witte lijnen gingen, hijzelf deed dat niet. In gesprek met interviewer van dienst James Hinchcliffe laat hij zijn licht schijnen op de sessie: "Ik denk dat we het als team heel erg goed hebben gedaan. We weten dat het in sprintweekenden belangrijker dan ooit is om goed te presteren in de eerste vrije training. We begonnen hierdoor met een sterke basis aan de kwalificatie, dat komt door het goede werk van de jongens. De auto voelde direct heel goed aan."

Foutjes

Leclerc was eigenlijk tevreden met al zijn rondjes in de kwalificatie op het Circuit of the Americas. De Monegask was dan ook heel erg in zijn sas met zijn rondje: "Ik was heel blij met mijn kwalificatie vandaag. Ik maakte wel een paar foutjes in de laatste ronde in Q3, maar ik denk dat het eigenlijk voor niemand echt makkelijk was. Ik ben dan ook heel erg blij dat ik de pole position op zak heb."

Die waren duidelijk te zien in de laatste ronde. Had zeker nog twee tienden in gezeten. Maar goed pole is pole. :)
