Verstappen grijnst na simpele zege: "Reed mijn eigen race"

Met speels gemak schreef Max Verstappen zojuist de Amerikaanse sprintrace op zijn naam. De Nederlander behield de leiding bij de start en zag daarna zijn tegenstanders alleen nog maar op de grote schermen langs de baan. Verstappen was tevreden en hij leeft nu toe naar de Grand Prix van morgen.

Verstappen kende een enorm sterke sprintdag in Austin. Op het Circuit of the Americas behield Verstappen bij de start de leidende positie, hij hield de jagende Charles Leclerc achter zich en daarna kon Lewis Hamilton ook niet meer bij hem in de buurt komen. Verstappen reed daarna de zege naar huis en dat deed hij op een rustige manier. Het leek haast alsof Verstappen gewoon even naar de supermarkt was gereden.

Krap

Na afloop van zijn succesvolle sprintrace meldde Verstappen zich in het parc fermé om eventjes kalm terug te kijken op zijn wedstrijd. Bij interviewer van dienst David Coulthard sprak hij zich uit: "Het was best krap in bocht 1. Gelukkig was er genoeg ruimte daar. Daarna konden we gewoon onze eigen race rijden en konden we de pace in de gaten houden. Aan het einde van de sprint had ik het naar mijn zin, want ik mocht meer gaan pushen."

Zondag

Verstappen kijkt nu vooral uit naar de dag van morgen. In de Grand Prix start hij immers slechts als zesde na een rampzalige kwalificatie op de vrijdag. De Nederlandse wereldkampioen heeft er echter best wel zin in: "Starten vanaf de zesde plaats maakt het wat moeilijker dan vandaag. Het wordt interessant en ik hoop dat we een beetje lol kunnen gaan hebben. We willen natuurlijk gewoon gaan winnen.

Slim gereden, niet geforceerd in het begin, hield Hamilton op genoeg afstand om niet in de problemen te komen ondanks de drs die Lewis een aantal ronden had. Toen hij Lewis uit de drs had gereden ging het hard. Op het einde had hij genoeg band over om er nog een paar rappe ronde te rijden.
Ging veel makkelijker dan vooraf gedacht, z’n bandenmanagment was weer subliem, daar maakt hij het grootste verschil t.o.v. de rest.

  Dat klopt ook, daarom wordt ook niet iedereen wereldkampioen in de auto van Max.

  Zodra Hamilton uit drs was ging Verstappen langzamer rijden. Van ca 1:39.3 naar 1:39.7. Dat was rondje 7. Vervolgens lag er een lineaal over zijn rondetijden. Tot en met ronde 13 bleef hij die rondetijden rijden. Daarna ging hij elk rondje ca een tiende sneller met aflopende rondetijden. Van de top 5 was hij de enige rijder met aflopende tijden. bij de rest liepen ze allemaal op.
  Overigens was Norris tweede snelste in vrije lucht.
  
  Toch zal het in de race vanavond moeilijk worden gok ik. Als Norris voor Leclerc kan komen, wat best kan gezien de starts tot nu in Cota, want het is tot nu 50-50 geweest wie na bocht 1 op kop lacht tussen de P1 en P2, dan zie ik wel een kans voor Norris om deze te winnen.
  
  Op Sky Duitsland spraken ze vooral voor de race vanavond over de pace van Hamilton en dat die wel even zou winnen. Ben wel benieuwd of andere zenders wel inzagen dat Norris sneller was dan Hamilton.

  Nee hoor. Het is volgens de specialisten hier de auto. Verstappen is verder maar matig die zou verliezen van veel andere rijders.
