Alonso baalt: "Risico om updates mee te nemen naar een sprintweekend"

Het team van Aston Martin is bezig met een tegenvallend raceweekend in Austin. De Britse renstal rijdt dit weekend met een flink geüpdatete bolide, maar de resultaten zijn alsnog niet om over naar huis te schrijven. Volgens Fernando Alonso komen deze resultaten ook door het sprintformat.

Aston Martin-coureurs Alonso en Lance Stroll kregen alleen in de eerste vrije training de tijd om aan de nieuwe updates te wennen. In de kwalificatie sloegen ze een modderfiguur door allebei al in het eerste gedeelte af te vallen. Ook op de zaterdag vielen de resultaten flink tegen. In de Sprint Shootout bereikten ze SQ3 niet en in de sprintrace konden Alonso en Stroll geen vuist maken.

Volgens Alonso worden de huidige tegenvallende resultaten niet veroorzaakt door de nieuwe updates. De Spaanse tweevoudig wereldkampioen wijst in gesprek met RaceFans naar het sprintformat: "We denken dat, want met meer vrije trainingen had je de tijd om meer set-ups uit te proberen. Dan had je het nieuwe pakket kunnen optimaliseren. Het was misschien wel een risico om de nieuwe updates mee te nemen naar een sprintweekend. Je laat zoveel afhangen van een perfecte VT1, waardoor je twee verschillende dingen gaat doen. Dat zorgt voor chaos en sinds dat moment lopen we achter."
