Hamilton hoopt Verstappen achter zich te houden: "Alles kan!"

Max Verstappen moet vandaag een inhaalrace gaan rijden om de zege te kunnen gaan pakken in Austin. Hij start slechts als zesde en dat betekent dat hij minimaal vijf auto's moet gaan inhalen om te winnen. Lewis Hamilton verwacht een zege van Verstappen, maar hij blijft toch hoopvol.

Verstappen verloor in de kwalificatie zijn pole position omdat hij over de track limits was gegaan. De Nederlander start daardoor als zesde, achter Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, Hamilton, Carlos Sainz en George Russell. Toch gaat iedereen er vanuit dat Verstappen na afloop van de race op het hoogste treetje staat. In de sprintrace ging Verstappen er namelijk op eenvoudige wijze met de winst vandoor.

Lewis Hamilton start straks voor Verstappen, maar hij verwacht een zege van de Nederlander. De Britse zevenvoudig wereldkampioen wordt op de persconferentie voor de top drie van de Sprint gevraagd of hij Verstappen achter zich kan houden: "Alles is mogelijk! Maar het hangt er vanaf. Hij is een halve seconde per ronde sneller dan alle auto's voor hem, dat moet genoeg zijn om ons te pakken. Maar, je hebt ook te maken met bijvoorbeeld bandendegradatie en dat soort dingen. Ik denk echter dat hij heel snel zal gaan klimmen. We krijgen het dus zwaar om hem achter ons te houden."
