Albon steunt Perez: "Lastig tegen één van de beste coureurs te strijden"

Sergio Perez wordt dit seizoen vrijwel elk weekend verslagen door zijn Red Bull Racing-teamgenoot Max Verstappen. Verstappen heeft de wereldtitel al op zak terwijl Perez momenteel worstelt met zijn vorm. De Mexicaan krijgt veel steun, ook ervaringsdeskundige Alexander Albon staat vierkant achter hem.

Het verschil tussen Verstappen en Perez is dit seizoen zeer groot. Verstappen domineert en hij heeft slechts drie Grands Prix niet gewonnen, slechts twee van die races werden gewonnen door Perez. De Mexicaan is verder bezig met een zeer tegenvallend seizoen waarin hij veel foutjes maakt, ver achterblijft op zijn teamgenoot en waarin hij vaak al vroeg in de kwalificatie afvalt. Hij krijgt veel kritiek, maar zijn team Red Bull wil hem niet laten vallen.

Huidige Williams-coureur Alexander Albon werd in 2020 ook volledig naar huis gereden door Verstappen bij Red Bull. De Thaise Brit sprak in Mexico zijn steun voor Perez uit: "Het is ontzettend lastig om het tegen één van de beste coureurs ooit op te nemen, in mijn jaar was dat ook niet makkelijk. Uiteindelijk maken lastige periodes je alleen maar sterker als coureur en ik denk dat Sergio er best wel goed mee omgaat. Ikzelf kijk niet zoveel om mij heen en ik focus mij dan ook vooral op mijn eigen prestaties.'

De cijfers van Perez zouden qua punten en podiums beter moeten zijn. Niet winnen omdat je teamgenoot de beste ooit is, is geen schande.
