Williams-coureurs gefrustreerd na 'moeilijke' kwalificatie in Mexico

Op de vrijdag en tijdens VT3 stond was het team van Williams favoriet voor het behalen van Q3 in de kwalificatie voor de Grand Prix van Mexico. Na de kwalificatie stonden Alex Albon en Logan Sargeant op P14 en P20, ook mede door het overschrijden van de baanlimieten en door een wagen die totaal anders aanvoelde dat in de vrije trainingen.

Albon was niet helemaal eens met de straf, maar baalde vooral dat de Williams moeilijker te besturen was.
''Ik denk niet dat het tracklimits waren, maar misschien heb ik het mis'', begon hij op de officiële website van Williams. ''Op basis van het externe beeld van de opname leek het erop dat mijn achterbanden nog steeds op de witte lijn stonden, maar het is wat het is.''

“Het is echt frustrerend, maar wat nog frustrerender is, is het gebrek aan snelheid in de kwalificatie; Ik was vier of vijf tienden langzamer dan in FP3 en verloor veel grip, dus ik moest bijna aan bandenmanagement doen om de banden in sector 3 levend te houden.''

Albon blijft dus in het ongewisse over de oorzaak van de problemen die hij ondervond. ''Het was hetzelfde van FP1 tot FP2 en nu van FP3 tot Quali, dus we moeten er echt naar kijken. We kijken naar morgen en kijken wat we kunnen doen."

Sargeant begon de zaterdag veelbelovend, maar zijn hoop op een mooi resultaat ging als een nachtkaars uit en legde uit hoe dat kwam. ''Helaas ging het vanmiddag mis voor ons. Tijdens die laatste ronde wilde iedereen ongeveer een minuut in de pitlane stoppen en veel bandentemperatuur verliezen, en toen was er hinder in de ronde en gele vlaggen. Ik heb nooit echt een eerlijke kans gehad om een ronde neer te zetten. Ik was op de verkeerde tijd op de verkeerde plaats. We hadden Q2 moeten ingaan.''

Toch steekt de Amerikaan ook hand in eigen boezem. ''Achteraf gezien moesten we vroeg gaan en al de chaos voor zijn. Het is frustrerend omdat we dit weekend een snelle auto hebben, maar geen tijd op het bord hebben gezet. Het racetempo was gisteren niet zo slecht, dus we gaan morgen proberen vooruit te komen'', sloot de Williams-coureur strijdvaardig af.
