Tost geloofde in Verstappen: "Hij had een fantastische opleiding"

Franz Tost neemt na dit weekend afscheid als teambaas van AlphaTauri. De Oostenrijker kan terugkijken op een lange loopbaan waarin hij heeft samengewerkt met veel grote namen. Hij stond ook aan de wieg van het debuut van Max Verstappen en Tost is daar nog altijd trots op.

Verstappen debuteerde in 2015 op 17-jarige leeftijd in de Formule 1. Hij was opgepikt door Red Bull en men gaf hem de kans bij het toenmalige team van Toro Rosso. Verstappen maakte zeer veel indruk en hij snoerde zijn criticasters al snel de mond. Tost moest alles onder controle houden en hij moest Verstappen ook de juiste steun geven. Bijna tien jaar later kijkt de Oostenrijker met een goed gevoel terug op deze situatie.

Vertrouwen

Tost is te gast in de podcast 'Beyond the Grid' en daarin kijkt hij terug op de eerste meters van Verstappen in de koningsklasse van de autosport: "Iedereen zei: 'Je bent gekt, hoe kan je iemand zonder rijbewijs in die auto zetten?' Ik reageerde door te zeggen dat ik er niet over wilde discussiëren en ik zei dat ze over vijf jaar maar eens terug moesten komen. Ik wilde zien wat hij in onze auto kon doen. Hij was direct goed. Hij leerde het remmen en alles. Dat is het grote voordeel van Max, hij had geen probleem met de snelheid."

Talent

Tost zag dat Verstappen direct alle controle had over zijn auto. Bij de Oostenrijker bestond er geen twijfel over het talent van Verstappen: "Dat was duidelijk. Hij was 17 jaar, maar dat maakt niet uit. Dat is alleen maar een nummer op de kalender. Hij racete alsof hij al jaren meereed. Dat was doorslaggevend. Hij had ook een fantastische opleiding. Als je hem wat uitlegde dan had hij direct door hoe het werkte. Hij ging naar buiten en hij probeerde het, of het nou werkte of niet. Daarna besloot hij of het de moeite waard was. Anders coureurs hadden een paar rondjes nodig, hij niet."
