Verstappen blijft teamgenoten vernederen: "Wel altijd mijn doel"

Max Verstappen werd dit jaar voor het derde seizoen op rij wereldkampioen in de Formule 1. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur was veel sneller dan zijn teamgenoot Sergio Perez. Verstappen verpulverde wel vaker zijn teamgenoten en hij geeft toe dat dit wel een beetje zijn doel is.

Verstappen wist dit jaar negentien Grands Prix te winnen, zijn teamgenoot Perez kwam niet verder dan twee zeges. Terwijl Verstappen record na record brak, zocht Perez naar zijn vorm. Het gat werd met de race groter en het was zeker niet de eerste keer dat Verstappen zijn teamgenoot naar huis reed. In het nabije verleden verloren Pierre Gasly en Alexander Albon hierdoor hun stoeltje bij Red Bull.

Verstappen is de onbetwiste kopman bij het team van Red Bull Racing. De Nederlander wordt dan ook gezien als de coureur die voor zijn teamgenoten onverslaanbaar is. In gesprek met De Telegraaf geeft hij toe dat dit de bedoeling is: "Dat is wel altijd mijn doel. Je moet de beste willen zijn in je team. Er kan best een keer een moment komen dat er iemand naast mij komt die het mij wat moeilijker maakt, maar daar ben ik nu verder niet mee bezig. Soms wordt er weleens gezegd dat je als coureur de druk van een teamgenoot nodig hebt. Maar dat heb ik niet nodig om te presteren."

    Deze vraag werd Perez ook gesteld, uitgerekend door Olav en Jack toen Ocon nog zijn teamgenoot was.

    Hij gaf hetzelfde antwoord als Verstappen.

      Volgens mij heb jij dan ook niet gelijk, Larry. "zijn team" is duidelijk verkeerd gekozen.

      Overigens als ik er goed over nadenk dan om meerdere redenen. Want Perez is geen onderdeel van zijn team. En hij wil natuurlijk de beste van iedereen zijn.

      Maar ter zake, to the point, het ging (en gaat) mij om het woord "vernederen" wat Max absoluut niet heeft gebruikt.

      Helemaal mee eens @Larry. Ik had zijn woorden ook al een paar keer opnieuw gelezen en hij heeft het nergens over vernederen. Je kunt zelfs iemand anders verslaan met een hele kleine marge en dat is zeer zeker geen vernederen. Hij wil de beste zijn, dat is heel iets anders!!

    Je moet ervan uitgaan dat je de beste bent, en als je je teamgenoten niet verslaat, dat komt omdat er technisch iets fout is, of omdat je iets niet weet. ... Maar blijven onthouden dat je de beste bent.
