Wolff ziet 'bijzondere details' op nieuwe auto

Het team van Mercedes is momenteel hard bezig met het ontwerp voor de auto voor 2024. Het team past het concept volledig aan na twee seizoenen vol teleurstelling. Teambaas Toto Wolff blijft mysterieus over het nieuwe concept, maar hij heeft wel een aantal interessante zaken gezien.

Mercedes verraste begin 2022 vriend en vijand met een bijzonder concept. Ze kozen voor een zogenaamde wagen met zeropods. Deze extreem kleine sidepods waren uniek, maar ze werkten niet. Mercedes gaf openlijk toe dat er problemen waren met het design, maar toch reden ze begin dit jaar weer met zeropods. Halverwege het seizoen gooiden ze dit echter weer in de prullenbak en kozen ze voor een normaler design.

Moedig

Mercedes wil volgend jaar weer meevechten om de zeges. Daarom gaan ze het gehele design aanpassen en teambaas Toto Wolff is daar blij mee. Wolff is tijdens de Autosport Awards duidelijk over de zeropods in gesprek met PlanetF1: "Ik denk dat we moedig waren door zo'n auto de baan op te sturen. Het ging over een concept dat niemand anders had gekozen, maar helaas werkte het niet. Zo simpel is het. Het is gewoon natuurkunde en niets anders."

Details

Wolff is in ieder geval blij met de dingen die hij ziet in de fabriek. De Oostenrijker heeft enorme verwachtingen van de nieuwe auto en hij ziet allerlei goede signalen. Hij is daar nogal eerlijk over: "De auto van volgend jaar wordt iets conventioneler, het is meer iets wat je kunt verwachten van een Formule 1-wagen. Maar, er zijn wel een aantal details die ik nog niet op een andere auto heb gezien."

    Een van die bijzondere, nieuwe details zijn de sidepods. Lewis heeft namelijk altijd gezegd dat hij nu te ver naar voren zit, dus hebben ze bij de W15 eindelijk de zitpositie naar achteren geplaatst en gelijktijdig hebben ze ook de neus van de bolide iets verlengd. Hierdoor werden ze genoodzaakt om ook de sidepods flink te verlengen en deze lopen dus verder door. Gezien de enorme lengte van deze sidepods hebben ze in de Benz fabriek al een naam gekregen: The Sauropods ;-)

    Grappig, Wolff spreekt slechts van goede signalen en bijzondere details. Terwijl de Britten zich nu al verkneukelen over BS verhalen dat Mercedes maarliefst 2,5 seconde zou hebben gevonden.

      Dit werd ook gewoon verteld eind 2021 en 2022 door Wolff. Ze hadden een concept dat geweldig was en de nieuwe wagen zou sneller zijn dan de snelste in 2021, wat ze zelf waren na Silverstone. En de auto was ondanks de nieuwe vloer regels (vloer omhoog en dergelijke) al dubbele downforce had ten opzichte van de auto van 2022.

      Ik wacht verder af.

      Overigens is er voor mij 1 reden waarom ik niet hoop dat ze mee gaan doen. En dat is omdat ik niet weer zo'n vuile oorlog naast de baan wil en waar te pas en te onpas men bij de stewards en bij de fia zit te klagen.

      Vond de strijd Ferrari - Red Bull begin 2022 een verademing. Vond bijvoorbeeld ook wat Vasseur een paar dagen zei een verademing. Die zocht het bij Ferrari zelf en wees absoluut niet naar Mercedes rond de strijd om de tweede plek.
      Ik hoop dan ook dat er een strijd komt met veel teams, maar zonder Mercedes. Zo dat is er uit.

      Heerlijk juist die politieke strijd ook naast de balans het gaat hard tegen hard.

      Ik kijk daar graag maar ik de F1 want het zorgt voor een onvergetelijk seizoen.

      Red Bull heeft er net zo’n hand van als dat Mercedes het naast de baan opzoekt met steken in de rug en sneeren.

      Zie het graag gebeuren dat Mercedes of Ferrari RB in de hoogtijdagen van de troon stoot zoals dat eigenlijk altijd zo gaat in een sport.

      Horner gaat vooral in de tegenaanval. Begin 2022 niet gehoord. In tegendeel. Horner roemde de sportieve instelling van Ferrari. Was natuurlijk ook een steek richting Mercedes. Horner en Wolff zijn water en vuur voor elkaar

      Daarbij heb ik nergens gezegd dat het alleen Wolff is. Ook Hamilton en Horner deden mee. De enige die naast de baan niet meededen waren Bottas, Perez en Verstappen.

    Het ging over een concept dat andere teams al hadden onderzocht en ontdekt hadden dat het niet ging werken, zelfs Alfa Romeo had dat al door. Dan heb je geen durf maar dan ben je niet de slimste, zachtjes uitgedrukt...

      Nee, ik denk het niet.

      Toto dicht zichzelf, zijn team en zijn rijders allerlei eigenschappen toe de laatste tijd, hij is echt compleet van het padje af sinds eind 2021. Wat leeft deze vent in een andere realiteit zeg, het is bijna zielig om aan te horen.
