'Mercedes overweegt juridische stappen tegen FIA na Wolff-rel'

De FIA zorgde deze week voor een enorme rel in de Formule 1-wereld. Op dinsdag werd bekend dat er een onderzoek werd geopend naar Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff en zijn vrouw Susie Wolff. Het zorgde voor enorm veel ophef en gisteren maakte de FIA bekend het onderzoek af te blazen. Mercedes neemt nu mogelijk juridische stappen.

Nadat er afgelopen weekend een artikel verscheen in F1 Business Magazine over mogelijke belangenverstrengeling van Wolff, opende de FIA op dinsdagavond een onderzoek. De Formule 1, Mercedes en Susie Wolff reageerden woedend. In het artikel werd gesteld dat een aantal teambazen zich zorgen zouden maken over vertrouwelijke FOM-informatie in handen van Wolff. Maar de overige teams ontkenden dit. In een gezamenlijk statement lieten alle teams weten dat ze er niets mee te maken hebben.

De FIA besloot gisteravond dat ze toch geen onderzoek gaan doen naar mogelijke belangenverstrengeling. Hiermee kwam een bizarre rel ten einde, maar mogelijk krijgt het toch nog een staartje. De BBC meldt namelijk dat Mercedes juridische stappen overweegt tegen de FIA vanwege de geleden reputatieschade. De Britse omroep meldt daarnaast dat er twijfel bestaat over de rol van FIA-president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. Het is niet duidelijk of Ben Sulayem een rol heeft gespeeld bij het onderzoek, hij ontving eerder wel kritiek op zijn acties.

Mercedes heeft de opgelopen imagoschade al jaren geleden zelf in gang gezet en zal hopelijk nog veel groter worden.

Enige kritiek die ik heb is op de FIA dat ze het onderzoek stop hebben gezet. Waarom? Als je eerst gaat onderzoeken of dat er iets onderzocht moet worden, dan doe je dat in alle stilte. Pas als er twijfel is, dan maak je openbaar dat je dit gaat onderzoeken en dan zet je ook door.

Als ome Ben zelf achter het onderzoek zit, zoals bronnen zeggen, zal zijn kop rollen en zijn de zorgen bij Liberty een stuk minder.
Al met al een farce eersteklas, voor het onderzoek uit en kom met een conclusie. Nu is het 'wij van wc eend zien geen verdachte dingen'. Had gebleken dat er wel iets was had het gigantische schade aan het f1- merk gedaan.
