Verstappen haalde motivatie uit bijnaam Perez

Max Verstappen werd dit jaar met gemak wereldkampioen in de Formule 1. De Nederlander kreeg geen echte tegenstand, al wist zijn Red Bull-teamgenoot Sergio Perez twee races te winnen in de openingsfase van het seizoen. Perez werd gezien als een specialist op stratencircuits, maar Verstappen haalde daar juist meer motivatie uit.

Perez wist twee Grands Prix te winnen in de openingsfase van het seizoen. De Mexicaanse Red Bull Racing-coureur won in de straten van Jeddah en Bakoe. Hij kwam hierdoor redelijk in de buurt van Verstappen in het wereldkampioenschap en het leverde hem de bijnaam 'king of the streets' op. De resultaten zakten daarna in toen Perez crashte in de kwalificatie in Monaco, hij kende daarna een aantal rampzalige raceweekenden.

Motivatie

Verstappen zag ook dat zijn teamgenoot werd gezien als de 'koning van de stratencircuits'. De Nederlander laat aan Viaplay weten wat dit met het deed: "Het maakte mij alleen maar nog gemotiveerder om te laten zien dat het niet zo is. Dat is eigenlijk de verkeerde motivatie voor andere mensen, maar het is niet zo dat ik er bang van word. Bepaalde media, bijvoorbeeld uit Mexico of Spaanstalige media, hypen dat natuurlijk. Mensen hopen natuurlijk sowieso op een titelgevecht."

Snelle circuits

Verstappen pakte uiteindelijk de handschoen op en hij won tien races op rij in de Formule 1. Hij deed dit vanaf de Grand Prix van Miami en hij stelt dat hij later in het jaar pas echt snel kan worden: "Ik weet ook dat we aan het begin van het seizoen nooit echt de circuits krijgen die perfect bij mij passen. Die banen komen later in het jaar pas, dan heb ik het over de snellere circuits met veel snelle bochten."
