De ommekeer van Verstappen: "Niets lukte op dat moment"

Max Verstappen was dit jaar zeer dominant in de Formule 1. De Nederlander won negentien Grands Prix en hij werd voor het derde seizoen op rij wereldkampioen. Hij presteert zeer consistent en volgens zijn engineer Gianpiero Lambiase komt dit door een mooie ontwikkeling van Verstappen.

Verstappen rijdt al sinds 2016 voor het team van Red Bull Racing. Al sinds het begin werkt hij samen met zijn race-engineer Gianpiero Lambiase. De twee zijn in de loop der tijd goede vrienden geworden en ze begrijpen elkaar. Dat zorgt ervoor dat ze precies van elkaar weten wat er aan de hand is. Verstappen maakte een raketstart bij Red Bull, maar na een mindere periode wist hij echt de knop om te zetten.

Crashen

Lambiase weet nog precies op welk moment Verstappen de knop om wist te zetten. De Red Bull-engineer ziet twee stadia van Verstappens ontwikkeling, zo stelt hij in een YouTube-video op het kanaal van Red Bull. Hij wijst naar 2018: "Niets lukte toen, behalve tegen dingen of andere auto's aanrijden. Dat was wel een keerpunt waarop hij besefte dat het de verkeerde kant op ging en dat hij dingen moest veranderen. Vanaf dat moment middenin het seizoen was hij de rest van het jaar ineens heel competitief ten opzichte van Daniel. Dat was het eerste stadium."

Consistentie

Volgens Lambiase wist Verstappen daarna echte stappen te zetten. Hij werd steeds consistenter en dat was de opmars naar de eerste wereldtitel: "Het tweede stadium was echt een soort gevolg van 2018, waarbij hij leerde dat je gewoon moet finishen als je mee wil doen voor het wereldkampioenschap. Dat kwartje viel in 2020, toen de auto nog niet zo competitief was. Hij kon toen nog geen gooi doen naar de titel, maar hij was enorm consistent. Dat leverde hem in 2021 uiteindelijk ook de wereldtitel op."

Het duurde ff voordat Max de Bull op de rit had in 2018, maar daarna was de beer los en ging die als de Brandweer!

  terug liep naar de garage en Marco een wegwerp gebaar maakte. Dit heeft hij zicht aangetrokken.
