Domenicali zag 'enorm positief' seizoen ondanks Verstappen-overheersing

Het afgelopen Formule 1-seizoen was niet bepaald spannend. Max Verstappen heerste en niemand kon bij hem in de buurt komen. Toch was Formule 1-CEO Stefano Domenicali blij met het seizoen. Hij stelt zelfs dat de sport flink is gegroeid in het afgelopen jaar.

Max Verstappen won dit jaar een recordaantal van negentien Grands Prix. Alleen zijn Red Bull Racing-teamgenoot Sergio Perez en Ferrari-coureur Carlos Sainz wisten ook te winnen. Verstappen had de sport in een houdgreep en dat zorgde niet alleen voor complimenten. Er was namelijk ook kritiek, want door de overmacht van Verstappen zou de sport te saai en te voorspelbaar maken. Dat zou dan weer voor een afname van interesse zorgen.

Positief

Volgens Formule 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali klopt hier helemaal niets van. De Italiaan is juist enorm enthousiast over het afgelopen seizoen. In het Rai-programma 'La Politica nel Pallone' is Domenicali opvallend enthousiast: "Het seizoen dat we net hebben afgesloten was enorm positief voor de hele Formule 1, ondanks de dominantie van Max Verstappen. De aandacht is enorm toegenomen, we hebben voet aan wal gezet op nieuwe markten en we hebben nieuwe producten ontwikkeld."

Oudere fans

Volgens Domenicali is het ook niet erg dat er dingen worden aangepast in de sport. Er is immers ook veel kritiek op de sprintraces en de aangepaste formats. De Italiaan heeft veel respect voor de oudere fans: "We moeten respect hebben voor de mensen die zijn opgegroeid met de Formule 1 omdat die ons altijd al hebben gevolgd. We moeten de kritiek accepteren, als het wel constructief is en als het ook leuk is voor de nieuwe fans."

  Sympathiek van Leclerc om zijn van Bottas gekregen kalender door te geven aan Zhou. Niet dus. Nu heeft Zhou er twee!
  Leclerc kreeg op zijn beurt een duur padel racket van Alonso.
  Ook leuk en gevat van Lance dat hij Alonso een kapiteinspet gaf voor zijn nieuwe jacht.
  En Yuki een Chinees kookboek van Zhou waar hij oprecht blij mee was.

  Ik geloofde m'n oren niet toen hij zei waarom hij nooit meedoet!
  Hij kreeg altijd prutspul terwijl hij mooie cadeaus gaf. Niet in deze woorden, maar daar kwam het op neer.
  Dat heb je altijd dat sommigen met iets van 10€ aan komen zetten, Leclerc gaf zelfs toe dat hij de kalender zelf gekregen had en er niets aan had. Leuk voor Bottas trouwens.
  Het gaat om de gezelligheid en om samen dat "spel" te spelen aan het eind vh seizoen.

  Max had er aardig wat voor gedaan (lees: laten doen 😜).

Verstappen doet aan Schumacher denken
De voormalige Ferrari-teambaas ging ook nog specifiek in op de dominantie van Verstappen in de afgelopen jaren.
"Onze sport wordt altijd al gekarakteriseerd door dit soort periodes, met een combinatie van een sterke auto en een buitengewone coureur. Met Max hebben we een volwassen coureur in zowel de races als de kwalificaties.
Hij doet me aan Michael Schumacher denken aan de manier waarop hij niks overlaat voor de rest", concludeert Domenicali, die van 1996 tot en met 2006 als teammanager samenwerkte met de Duitser bij Ferrari.
