Het Formule 1-seizoen zit er alweer een aantal weken op. Terwijl het jaar op zijn einde loopt, zijn de teams allang bezig met het nieuwe seizoen. GPToday.net kijkt nog één keer naar de prestaties van de coureurs in 2023. Vandaag in deel zes: Daniel Ricciardo, de verrassende comeback kid.

Derde coureur

De Formule 1 leek zich in maart op te gaan maken voor een Ricciardo-loos seizoen. De goedlachse en razend populaire Australiër had geen zitje gevonden en hij had zich al voorbereid op een seizoen aan de zijlijn. Hij keerde wel terug bij zijn oude liefde Red Bull Racing. Hij was niet eens de reservecoureur, hij zou gaan fungeren als derde coureur. Dat hield in dat hij zich vooral mocht gaan focussen op demorondjes en promotieactiviteiten.

Ricciardo was bij de eerste paar races niet eens aanwezig op de circuits. Hij kon zich meer focussen op andere activiteiten naast de baan. Hij experimenteerde als commentator en hij stal de show in de socialmedia-filmpjes van Red Bull. Dat hij nog steeds enorm populair was, werd wel duidelijk zodra de regie hem in beeld bracht. Op de tribunes barstte er een luid gejuich los zodra er een shot was te zien van Ricciardo in een pitbox.

Bij Red Bull wilden ze weten of ze nog iets hadden aan Ricciardo. Hij werd weliswaar aangesteld als derde coureur, maar dat betekende in de realiteit niet dat hij alleen maar donuts draaide in historische steden of dat hij schijtlollige filmpjes mocht opnemen. Hij maakte ook meters in de simulator en hij mocht daags na de Britse Grand Prix plaatsnemen in de RB19 voor een bandentest.

Nyck de Vries

Voor Red Bull was dit een geweldige graadmeter, want ze zaten met de worstelende Nyck de Vries in de maag. De Nederlander reed geen deuk in een pakje boter bij zusterrenstal AlphaTauri. Ricciardo maakte indruk tijdens de bandentest en al voor zijn laatste rondje had Red Bull genoeg gezien. De Vries werd de deur gewezen en Ricciardo mocht enigszins verrassend zijn comeback maken in de Formule 1.

In Hongarije kroop Ricciardo voor het eerst achter het stuur van de AT04. De grote glimlach was weer terug en Ricciardo schitterde als vanouds. In zijn comebackrace was hij direct sneller dan zijn nieuwe teamgenoot Yuki Tsunoda, maar in België vielen de resultaten weer flink tegen.

Tegenslag

In de zomerstop deed Ricciardo er alles aan om zo goed mogelijk voor de dag te komen in de tweede helft van het seizoen. Fit en vrolijk wandelde Ricciardo de paddock in Zandvoort binnen. Hij wilde de wereld laten zien dat hij nog steeds zijn snelheid van vroeger had. In de tweede vrije training ging het echter helemaal mis. Hij crashte en hierbij liet hij zijn stuurwiel te laat los. Het stuur klapte terug tegen zijn hand en toen was het mis. Met enorm veel pijn stapte Ricciardo uit en in het ziekenhuis in Haarlem volgde de pijnlijke boodschap: een gebroken middenhandsbeentje.

Ricciardo’s comeback leek als een nachtkaars uit te gaan. Terwijl hij een operatie onderging aan zijn hand, liet zijn vervanger Liam Lawson mooie dingen zien. De Nieuw-Zeelander schitterde en hij werd in korte periode zeer populair. Ricciardo was langer afwezig dan gedacht. In Italië, Singapore, Japan en Qatar stond hij aan de zijlijn.

2024

Hij liet zich niet uit het veld slaan. Ricciardo was aanwezig in Singapore en in Japan mocht hij iets moois bekendmaken. AlphaTauri gaf hem een contract voor 2024 en dat betekent een fulltime comeback voor de Honey Badger. In Austin kroop hij weer achter het stuur, maar hij kon nog niet schitteren.

In Mexico-Stad liet Ricciardo zien dat hij echt nog wel een potje kan sturen. Ricciardo reed een geweldige kwalificatie en hij mocht starten op een waanzinnige vierde plaats. De Australische coureur reed een machtige race waarin hij geruime tijd zijn positie vast wist te houden. Hij kwam als zevende over de finish en daarmee claimde hij zijn enige WK-punten van het jaar.

2025

Ricciardo’s jaar nam dus een verrassende wending. Niemand had de comeback verwacht en niemand zag het nieuwe contract aankomen. Het is niet gek dat AlphaTauri hem een nieuwe kans geeft. Het team ondergaat een metamorfose in 2024 en enige stabiliteit is daarvoor belangrijk. In tegenstelling tot Lawson heeft Ricciardo wel bakken met ervaring. Voor een team als AlphaTauri is dat goud waard. Een goed seizoen in 2024 kan Ricciardo zomaar nog meer blingbling opleveren. Het is geen geheim dat Red Bull hem in het hoofd heeft voor een zitje in 2025. 2024 wordt dus een belangrijk jaar voor de comeback kid.

Gun iedereen altijd alles, ik heb echter wel wat moeite met de miljoenen die McLaren aan clown Daniel heeft moeten betalen.

COTA 2022 was wel een druppel zeg maar.
