Perez zag snelle opmars van concurrentie niet aankomen

Sergio Perez werd dit jaar tweede in het wereldkampioenschap in de Formule 1. De Mexicaanse Red Bull Racing-coureur kende een seizoen met veel ups en downs. Over het algemeen is Perez tevreden met zijn jaar, maar hij had niet verwacht dat de concurrentie zo snel dichter bij zou komen.

Perez werd dit jaar tweede in het wereldkampioenschap met een enorme achterstand op zijn teamgenoot Max Verstappen. De Mexicaan won vroeg in het seizoen de Grands Prix van Saoedi-Arabië en Azerbeidzjan, maar daarna zakten zijn resultaten een beetje in. Hij worstelde vooral met zijn kwalificaties en dat zorgde ervoor dat hij veel inhaalraces moest gaan rijden. Aan het einde van het seizoen ging hij iets beter presteren.

Geweldig jaar

Perez is redelijk tevreden over het afgelopen seizoen. De Mexicaanse Red Bull-coureur is vooral trots op het resultaat van zijn team, zo deelt hij in de podcast 'Talking Bull': "Het was over het algemeen een geweldig jaar. We begonnen heel erg sterk aan het seizoen. Halverwege het jaar hadden we wat ups en downs, maar we slaagden er wel in om dat te omzeilen. We werkten ook nog eens het beste seizoen uit de geschiedenis van ons team af."

Concurrentie

Perez is vooral blij voor alle werknemers van het team van Red Bull. De Mexicaan deelt dan ook zijn complimenten uit aan hen: "Ik denk dat iedereen bij het team, ook thuis in de fabriek, dit helemaal verdient. Ze hebben een geweldige auto gebouwd. Sinds Bahrein en na de eerste vijf races wisten we dat we een heel sterk pakket hadden. De concurrentie dichtte het gat heel snel. Sneller dan ik dacht. Ik was verbaasd in hoeverre ze in staat waren om zich door het jaar te ontwikkelen. Daardoor werd het voor mij alleen maar moeilijker."

Perez zag de concurrentie niet komen. Daar had Max geen laat van. In Las Vegas pakt Lec nog net de tweede plaats voor de deus van Per weg. Het was tekenend voor het hele seizoen

Lijkt op Miami. Voor de start vroeg een journalist aan Perez of hij nog concurrentie van Max verwachtte. Perez was toen duidelijk: nee Max zie ik pas na de finish terug. We weten hoe dat is uitgepakt.

Enige zelfreflectie zou Perez wel sieren. Concurrentie kwam alleen maar dichtbij omdat hij zelf kapot slecht was. Klaarblijkelijk heeft hij niets geleerd van afgelopen seizoen. Met deze instelling zal hij het einde van volgebd seizoen niet halen.
