Wolff denkt nog niet aan stoppen: "Nog geen opvolger gevonden"

Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff is al geruime tijd werkzaam in de Formule 1. De Oostenrijker moet er echter nog niet aandenken om met pensioen te gaan. Wolff geeft aan dat hij nog veel kan bijdragen aan het team én dat hij nog geen ideale vervanger heeft gevonden.

Wolff stond aan de wieg van de successen van het team van Mercedes. De Oostenrijkse teambaas had het in de afgelopen twee seizoenen echter zeer zwaar in de Formule 1. Mercedes wist in 2022 slechts één race te winnen en dit jaar won de Duitse renstal zelfs geen enkele Grand Prix. Het was een pijnlijke statistiek en Wolff wil dan ook dat zijn team snel weer gaat meestrijden om de titels.

Expertises

Wolff moet er ook niet aan denken om zijn koptelefoon aan de wilgen te hangen. De Oostenrijker heeft nog niet het idee dat hij met pensioen moet gaan, zo laat hij weten aan PlanetF1: "Nee, want ik denk dat ik nog steeds veel kan bijdragen aan het team met mijn expertises. Het gaat erom om de boel een beetje bij elkaar te houden, maar soms ben ik wel een beetje emotioneel. Maar ze kennen mij hier zo goed, ze weten dat ik soms die lastige momenten heb op zondagavond."

Opvolger

Wolff heeft ook nog niemand gevonden die zijn werkzaamheden over zou kunnen nemen. De Oostenrijkse teambaas ziet dat ook als reden om nog niet weg te gaan: "Ik kan nog steeds veel bijdragen aan het team. Jammer genoeg heb ik nog niemand gevonden die meer energie, meer drive en meer skills heeft die volgens mij belangrijk zijn voor als je teambaas of CEO wil worden van zo'n team."

Dat Wolff niet aan de basis van het succes van Mercedes stond is een zekerheid. Je moet je zelfs afvragen welke bijdrage Wolff als teambaas heeft gehad met het grootste budget van alle teams. Of je moet het van onschatbare management ervaring vinden getuigen van de opdracht aan zijn personeel: ‘Schroef er een dikkere nieuwe motor in. Ik heb laten berekenen dat het tien plaatsen op de grid scheelt maar met 35pk extra zijn we na 20 rondjes back in business.” Toto Wolff is a highly over rated person. En elke race die Max wint toont dat aan.

  Dat van Brawn ben ik zo zeker niet, die auto was nog ontwikkeld en betaald toen Honda daar nog baas was, Brawn had gewoon geluk dat hij op het juiste moment de boel kon op koppen voor een appel en een ei.
